What is the Internet?
3
The Internet It is a collection of thousands of individual networks and organizations, each of which is run and paid for on its own. networks Each network cooperates with other networks to direct Internet traffic so that information can pass among them. Together, these networks and organizations make up the wired world of the Internet.

Network= a group of interconnected computers. Click here to go back to previous slide
5
Use your Senteo clicker to Answer 1.A group of interconnected computers is called ________? A.Network B.File C.Society D.Gateway
6
Working Together A general agreement must take place about: – Internet procedures – Standards for protocolsprotocols These procedures and standards are laid out in requests for comment (RFCs) that are agreed on by Internet users and organizations. (RFC)= a memorandum published by the IETF describing methods, behaviors, research, or innovations applicable to the working of the Internet-connected systems http://www.rfc-editor.org check out the homepage RFC Editor http://www.rfc-editor.org
7
Protocol= a set of rules which is used by computers to communicate with each other across a network. Click here to go back to previous slide.

Use your Senteo clicker to Answer 2.A general _____________ must take place about internet procedures & standards for protocols. A.Communication B.Check C.Access D.Agreement 3.A set of rules which is used by computers to communicate with each other across a network is called __________? A.Agreement B.Protocol C.Assignment D.Security 4.RFC stands for ________? A.Request for concert B.Refusal for comment C.Reference for comment D.Requests for comment

Who Makes Guidelines? A variety of groups guide the Internet’s growth by helping to establish standards and by educating people on the proper way to use the Internet. 1.Internet Society- a)Most Important group b)Private, non-profit group c)Supports the Internet Activities board d)http://www.isoc.org – check out the homepagehttp://www.isoc.org 2.Internet architecture Board (IAB)- a)Handles much of the Internet’s behind the scenes architectural issues. b)http://www.iab.org check out the homepagehttp://www.iab.org
10
Use your Senteo clicker to Answer 5.A variety of __________ guide the Internet’s growth. A.People B.Groups C.Cells D.Files
11
Who Makes Guidelines? 3.Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)- a)Is responsible for overseeing how the Internet’s TCP/IP protocols evolve.TCP/IP b)http://www.ietf.org check out the homepagehttp://www.ietf.org 4.The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)- Consortium a)Develops standards for the World Wide Web b)Is an industry consortium run by the Laboratory for Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) c)http://www.w3.org check out the homepagehttp://www.w3.org
12
TCP/IP= The Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol is the protocol suite that drives the Internet. – Handles network communications between network nodes (computer, or nodes, connected to the net). TCP- – the language computers use when communicating over the Internet. – the movement of data between applications IP- – handles the movement of data between host computers (local network or online service). Click here to go back to the previous slide.
13
Consortium= is an association of two or more individuals, companies, organizations or governments (or any combination of these entities) with the objective of participating in a common activity or pooling their resources for achieving a common goal. Click here to go back to the previous slide.

Use your Senteo clicker to Answer 6.An association of two or more individuals, companies, organizations, or governments with the objective of participating in a common activity. A.Protocol B.TCP C.Consortium D.IP 7.The language computers use when communicating over the Internet. A.TCP B.IP C.NCP D.IS

Who Makes Guidelines? 5.Registrars- a)Private companies who oversee registering of Internet domains b)Cooperate with one another to make sure one person or one company owns a particular domain c)Make sure all domains work properly. d)Domain= web address EX: www.zdnet.com or www.quepublishing.comwww.zdnet.com www.quepublishing.com e)Compete on costs and on giving extra services to those who buy a domain 6.InterNIC- a)Maintain the domains registered through registries. b)Tracks connections between Internet addresses, such as 125.34.24.21 and domain names, such as, www.zdnet.com. www.zdnet.com c)http://internic.net/ check out homepagehttp://internic.net/
16
Who Makes Guidelines? 7.Local Area Networks- a)Found in private companies, universities, government agencies, and online services. b)Funded separately from each other and in a variety of ways, such as fees from users, corporate support, taxes, and grants. 8.Internet Service provider (isp) or Internet access provider (IAP)- a)Provide Internet access for individuals. b)Have networks as well. c)Individuals who want to access the Internet pay ISP’s a monthly connection rate, so in that sense, everyone who uses the Internet helps pay for it. d)Connects to its customers using data transmission such as; Dial- up, DSL, cable modem, wireless
17
Use your Senteo clicker to Answer 8.What group is the most important group that guides the Internet’s growth? A.Internet society B.IAB C.IETF D.WSC 9.How many groups in this PowerPoint help make guidelines for the Internet? A.2 B.4 C.10 D.8 10.Internet Service Providers provide Internet access for individuals? A.True B.False
18
How are Networks connected? – Regional Networks: local networks join in consortiums with other regional or local networks Leased lines connect regional and local networks. Can be as simple as single telephone lines or as complex as fiber optic cable with microwave links and satellite transmission. – Backbones- very high-capacity lines that carry enormous amounts of Internet traffic Private companies make money by selling access to their lines such as, Government agencies; NASA, large private corporations pay for some of these backbones such as, The National Science Foundation.
19
Use your Senteo clicker to Answer 11.Regional networks & backbones ______ networks. A.Connect B.Disconnect C.Lease D.Simplify

Glue that holds the Internet Together Listed are Five of the most important pieces of Hardware Hardware - designed to transmit data between networks 1.Hubs - link groups of computers to one another and let computers communicate with one another 2.Bridges - link local area networks (LANs) with one another Enable data destined for another LAN to be sent there, while keeping local data inside its own network. 3.Gateways- translate data from one type of network to another. 4.Repeaters- amplify the data at intervals so the signal doesn’t weaken 5.Routers- manage Internet traffic Ensures the data arrive at the proper destination Hub Repeater Router
