I hope you all had a fun filled break. December was a jammed pack month for us! We looked at various Christmas stories, tuned our vocal cords, and were transported into the lives of the children who work in sweatshops. January will allow us to start fresh in some subjects, and wrap things up in others. Our Cross-Country Skiing program begins this month, as well as our novel study on Flat Stanley! Thank-you parents for the continued support and involvement in your child’s learning. Language Arts: In December we compared Disney’s Frozen to Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen. The students learned about the similarities between the two classic tales, and looked deeper into the meaning and themes of the fairy tales. January will start our novel study on Jeff Brown’s novel, Flat Stanley. This well known novel is about the adventures of Stanley Lambchop, who wakes up flat after a bulletin board falls on top of him. Spelling tests will started again on January 14 th, with the new spelling words being given to the students on January 7 th. Handwriting will become a focus also. Art: We used a salt to create some polar bear landscapes, and studied Emily Carr in December. Pablo Picasso will be a focus of study in January. Art will mix with our Flat Stanley novel study, and our new Building, Testing and Designing Thing Science Unit when we create robots.

2 Math: The end of our Numbers to 1000 Unit happened last month and we have started our Addition and Subtraction already. Students will be exposed to more real world examples Please help students complete any Math homework they have. Physical Education. The craziness of December had us focusing on Hockey this last month. Skiing, yoga and some Mission Impossible activities will happen also. Students are already showing some great improvements in their downward dogs! Health: We spent some more time learning about internet safety last month. We will be learning about goals through making some New Year’s resolutions this week, and assertiveness in the coming weeks. Grumpy Cat will also be stopping by to teach out about emotions! Social Studies: We finished and mailed our letters to our Pen Pals in New Sarepta, and finally used our passports to Tunisia, which we will continue to study in January. We partnered up with Mrs. Kent’s Grade 3 class for a sweatshop like activity after reading the novel, Iqbal, which is about a child working in a carpet factory. The students were great participants and learned shown valuable lessons. Science: Our wrap up of our Rock and Minerals will conclude on January 27 th with a vocabulary quiz. Our Building, Designing and Testing Things Unit will start after. We will be building lots of things like towers, totem poles, board games, forts, kites, bridges, and even a castle! I am collecting boxes for this unit, so please donate whatever cardboard boxes you have that you’re not using. The end results are going to be amazing!
