2 Summary 40% of the worlds cacao-bean supply comes from farms in west Africa 47,000 tons are shipped to the U.S. Cacao is produced by boys ages 12-16 who have been tricked or sold into slavery Slave labor is used to cut costs Fair trade is designed to make sure farmers receive a profit Even if the market price falls, the farmers are still paid through FLO People buy the chocolate because it is labeled as fair trade If the chocolate was priced lower, the farmers would still receive the same amount People do not agree with the fact that they chocolate is priced high FLO only promises that it’s a good deal for the farmer, not the consumer. It is the consumers choice to buy an expensive candy bar.
