1 Module 4 Lesson 23

2 Objectives Use number bonds to break apart three-digit minuend and subtract from the hundreds

3 Fluency: Take from the Ten
16-9. Ten Say the number sentence 10-9=1 Now add back the ones. 1+6=7 Say the complete number sentence 16-9=7 Do we take a 9 from the ten or the ones? Students will practice subtracting from the ten as a foundation for subtracting from the hundred in the lesson.

4 Fluency: Take from the Ten
15-7 10-7=3 5+3=8 14-8 10-8+2 4+2=6 13-6 10-6=4 3+4=7 16-7 10-7=3 6+3=9 18-9 10-9=1 8+1=9 12-7 10-7=3 2+3=5

5 Fluency: Adding to 1 Hundred
What is the number sentence for 10 more than 100? 100+10=110 25 more than 100. 100+25=125 34 more than 100 100+34=134 42 more than 100 100+42=142 50 more than 100 100+50=150 67 more than 100 100+67=167 78 more than 100 88 more than 100 100+88=188 Students practice adding to 1 hundred in preparation for the lesson

6 Sprint: Addition crossing a ten
Put your name and number at the top of the page Sprint A On your mark, get set, THINK Lets check your work Write the number you got correct up top Sprint B What was your improvement?

7 Application Problem Yossef downloaded 115 songs. 100 of them were rock. The rest were hip-hop. a. How many of Yossef’s songs were hip-hop? b. 80 of his rock songs were oldies. How many rock songs were new? Before showing the final animation on this slide have students work on the problem. Remind them that this is a two step problem.

8 Concept Development 107-90 7 100 Great! Now we can make an easier problem and subtract from the hundred. What is 100—90? Whisper to your neighbor Great! Am I finished solving the problem? I still have the 7 I need to worry about. I need to add back the 7 ones! What is 10+7? So, =17 Can we break apart 107 by making 100 and some ones? The work that is shown are of the steps that show taking from the hundreds then adding back the ones The number bonds they want us to use are the breaking apart in the first steps. Make sure you call this a number bond.

9 Concept Development Let’s try another one together. 127-70
Can you take out a 100? Show me how you can break apart 127 into 100 and some more If you take out the 100, how many are left in 127? 27 Now we can subtract easily! What’s ? 30 Great! Now, look at your number bond and add back the rest. Show me your work. Let’s add back 27 to 30; 27+30=57

10 Concept Development Let’s try a harder one 133-60
What should we do first? Break apart 133 by taking out 100 What is next? Subtract 60 from 100 How much is ? 40 What next? We put the parts together 40+33 So, What is ? 73

11 Practice You will practice on your problem set. Remember to use number bonds to help you break apart/decompose the number to make it an easier problem.
