2 9/22/2010 Who I Am Recent PSU graduate student!  M. Ed. Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment with a Focus in Literacy and Reading Specialist BSED Pennsylvania State University 7yrs. diverse teaching experience Expecting our 1 st child in January 2014! Axel- Our practice child Enjoy traveling, shopping, reading, cooking and sports

3 Who I AM Graduate of Temple University  Bachelors degree in Special Education N-12 and Elementary Education K-6  Starting my Masters Program 1/14 in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Specialist Certification. This is my third year of teaching Learning Support K-6. Mother of two- Emma, 8 and Reed 23 months! Love to read, run, and spend time at the beach

5 Daily Schedule 8:15- Students Arrive 8:30- Announcements/Morning Message 8:40-10:15- Word Study, Writing, & Reading 10:15-11:45- Math (Mrs. Barlow or Mrs. Carpenter) 11:45-12:10- Lunch 12:10-12:30- Recess 12:30-1:15- Special 1:15- 1:40- Tier Time 1:40-2:20- Science 2:20-3:00- Social Studies

6 Specials Day 1- Library Day 2- Gym Day 3- Art Day 4- Music Day 5- Health

7 Behavior Plan Recess- Owe recess if you miss homework that day- May go outside if the homework is completed Class Points- Class Goal/Rewards Behavior Chart  All students begin on “Ready to Learn”  Move up for positive behavior/rewards  Move down to help reinforce expected behaviors

8 9/22/2010 Reader’s Workshop Focus on analyzing texts on a deeper level  More than just surface content  Inference, connect, evaluate, predict, synthesis, monitor & clarify, visualize  Genres  Journaling- KigBlog  Thoughtfully participate in discussions (Jr. Great Books) Literature circles, book clubs, guided reading groups, mini-lessons, fluency and comprehension activities Performance Tasks…

9 Performance Task 1x a Trimester  1 st : Expository/Poetic Genre  2 nd : Narrative  3 rd : Media/Infographic  Culminating assessment that includes reading, writing, and word study components

10 9/22/2010 Writer’s Workshop Learning to be an author by creating literature Mentor texts & authors Year of the Writer  notebooks Resources: Being a Writer & Lucy Calkins Grammar  mini lessons embedded within reading and writing As a parent:  Have your child read aloud their work  Offer praise and celebrate successes  Give suggestions about ideas, not the nitty-gritty

13 Skyward Same as last year Parents can access grades during the semester Homework is also recorded in Skyward Is your information up-to-date? Copy of instructions up front if needed!

14 What’s New in 5 th Grade? All grades 3-6 will be taking a Reading & Writing PSSA this year (at the same time) Switching Classes- increased level of responsibility and organization (book boxes to help ) Performance Tasks/Google Docs  3 total (one each trimester)  Username/Passwords

15 Important Dates Trimesters  December 2 nd, 2013  March 11 th, 2014  June 13 th, 2014 PSSA 2014  March 17 th -March 28 th ELA/Math PSSA’S  Non-school sponsored travel will not be honored during this time 9/22/2010

16 Miscellaneous Volunteers & Clearances- Expires every 5 years! Birthdays- No food treats (same as last year) Skyward Family Access  Class site (Fusion Page)- I will update this daily with homework, upcoming activities, curriculum topics, etc.  EV site  PTA site 9/22/2010
