Background The roundabouts at Hopgrove are located to the north east of the City of York and form a junction between the A64 trunk road, the A1237 and the A1036. The Highways Agency is responsible for the circulatory carriageway of the A64 roundabout. The A1036 and adjacent Old Malton Road roundabout is part of the local classified highway network under the control of the City of York Council.

There are significant peak period delays associated with the current junction arrangements that affect commuter and leisure traffic. The resultant queues adversely affect journey time reliability and are contributory factors to a number of accidents. These problems are likely to be exacerbated with background traffic growth and pressures associated with land use changes in the locality, most notably the proposed developments at Monks Cross including the Monks Cross Park and Ride.

Scheme Objectives To reduce queues and delays on the trunk and local road approaches to the roundabouts in the peak periods and increase the reliability of journey times. To improve safety for all users. To minimise the environmental impact of the works.

Scheme Proposals The proposal consists of signalising the A64 Hopgrove roundabout and the A1237/A1036 Malton Road roundabout. Widening of the A64(T), A1237 and A1036 approaches; and also of the roundabout circulatory carriageways. Provision of hard standing areas for maintenance vehicles. Retaining structures along the A64(T) north and southbound approaches to the large roundabout. Extension of the Old Foss Beck culvert.

A mammal tunnel to mitigate environmental impact of the culvert extension. A 50mph speed limit will be introduced on the A64(T) in the vicinity of the junction. The link road will also be subject to a 40mph speed limit. Two sign gantries will be constructed – one on the A64 northbound approach and one on the circulatory carriageway. Off-carriageway cycle facilities are provided through the eastern half of the trunk road section of the scheme. Scheme is contained entirely within the existing highway boundary.
