Break!!

What is Information?

Autumn 2008IMT500: The Information Management Framework15 A Brief Exercise We’re new in this classroom and the program, and don’t know much about each other What better way to find out than by describing some unique characteristics that would help you remember each other? But there are some questions to answer if we’re going to do this systematically –What are those characteristics? –How would we express them? –What would we use them for if we had them? –How would we make them available to each other? –And many others you’ll explore for the next two years

Autumn 2008IMT500: The Information Management Framework16 Instructions You’ve got an index card in front of you –Write down the name of one category of information that would be something you’d like to know about your classmates Now, for each category we have on the whiteboard, tell me what words you would enter about yourself

Autumn 2008IMT500: The Information Management Framework17 What is Information? Michael Buckland says –“Being “informative” is situational and it would be rash to state of any thing that it might not be informative, hence information, in some conceivable situation.” What is the information “thing” in our system? Is our information a representation or a thing in itself?

Autumn 2008IMT500: The Information Management Framework18 Aspects of Information

Autumn 2008IMT500: The Information Management Framework19 How Do We Manage Information? How does this information set we’ve created map to Vannevar Bush’s vision? What systems might we have to build to make this accessible for everyone? How would you go about personalizing the information for your needs? How would you build a query mechanism to answer questions?
