Deuteronomy 7-8 “What Do We Do When We’ve Found We Have Forgotten Our God”
2
7:1-4 2 …you must completely destroy them. Make no treaties with them and show them no mercy. 3 You must not intermarry with them. Do not let your daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters, 4 for they will lead your children away from Me to worship other gods. Then the anger of YaHWeH will burn against you, and He will quickly destroy you.

ESV Study Bible These nations are being punished for their sins; the God of justice is using Israel as His executioner; and any mercy shown to those whom God is judging will not only compromise God’s punishment but will also make Israel vulnerable to follow their evil ways. the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete “Then in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.” Genesis 15:16
4
7:5-6 5 This is what you must do. You must break down their pagan altars and shatter their sacred pillars. Cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols. 6 For you are a holy people, who belong to YaHWeH your God. Of all the people on earth, YaHWeH your God has chosen you to be His own special treasure.
5
Exodus 19:5–6 NASB 95 “Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”
6
Psalms ( NASB ) “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Y A HW E H, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.” 33:12 “Praise the Y A HW E H, for the Y A HW E H is good; Sing praises to His name, for it is lovely. For the Y A HW E H has chosen Jacob for Himself, Israel for His own possession.” 135:3–4
7
Amos 3:1–2 NASB 95 “Hear this word which the Y A HW E H has spoken against you, sons of Israel, against the entire family which He brought up from the land of Egypt: ‘You only have I known (chosen) among all the families of the earth; Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.’”

1 Peter 1:14–16 The Living Bible “Obey God because you are his children; don’t slip back into your old ways—doing evil because you knew no better. But be holy now in everything you do, just as the Lord is holy, who invited you to be His child. He himself has said, “You must be holy, for I am holy.”
9
7:7-8 Rather, it was simply that YaHWeH loves you, and He was keeping the oath 7 “YaHWeH did not set His heart on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other nations, for you were the smallest of all nations! 8 Rather, it was simply that YaHWeH loves you, and He was keeping the oath He had sworn to your ancestors. That is why YaHWeH rescued you with such a strong hand from your slavery and from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.
10
Titus 3:4-7 NIV 84 not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.”
11
7:9-10 His unfailing love 9 Understand, therefore, that YaHWeH your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps His covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes His unfailing love on those who love Him and obey His commands. 10 But He does not hesitate to punish and destroy those who reject Him.
12
Exodus 34:5–7 ESV merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands “YaHWeH, YaHWeH God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
13
7:11-13 unfailing love He will love you 11 Therefore, you must obey all these commands, decrees, and regulations I am giving you today. 12 “If you listen to these regulations and faithfully obey them, YaHWeH your God will keep His covenant of unfailing love with you, as He promised with an oath to your ancestors. 13 He will love you and bless you…
14
7:14-24 Show them no mercy, and do not worship their gods, or they will trap you 14 You will be blessed above all the nations of the earth… 16 “You must destroy all the nations YaHWeH your God hands over to you. Show them no mercy, and do not worship their gods, or they will trap you…No one will be able to stand against you, and you will destroy them all.
15
7:25-26 you must not covet the silver or gold 26 Do not bring any detestable objects into your home 25 “You must burn their idols in fire, and you must not covet the silver or gold that covers them. You must not take it or it will become a trap to you, for it is detestable to YaHWeH your God. 26 Do not bring any detestable objects into your home, for then you will be destroyed, just like them. You must utterly detest such things, for they are set apart for destruction.
16
1 John 2:15–17 NASB 95 “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him… The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.” Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” (5:21)
17
8:1-2 1 “Be careful to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then you will live and multiply, and you will enter and occupy the land YaHWeH swore to give your ancestors. 2 Remember how YaHWeH your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands.
18
8:3 ( 8:3 ( Matt. 4:4; Luke 4:4) He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of YaHWeH. 3 Yes, He humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of YaHWeH.
19
Matthew 4:1–4 ESV “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness…He was hungry… “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But He answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” “But be seeking first the kingdom and His righteousness, and these things, all of them, shall be added to you.” Wuest (Matt. 6:33)
20
8:4-5 Just as a parent disciplines a child, YaHWeH your God disciplines you for your own good. 4 For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t blister or swell. 5 Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, YaHWeH your God disciplines you for your own good.
21
Hebrews 12:5–13 NLT ( Proverbs 3:11- 12) “And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said, “My child, don’t make light of YaHWeH’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. For YaHWeH disciplines those He loves, and He punishes each one He accepts as his child.” But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in His holiness.
22
8:6-9 7 For YaHWeH your God is bringing you into a good land of flowing streams and pools of water, with fountains and springs that gush out in the valleys and hills. 8 It is a land of wheat and barley; of grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates; of olive oil and honey. 9 It is a land where food is plentiful and nothing is lacking. It is a land where iron is as common as stone, and copper is abundant in the hills.
23
8:10-13 Beware that in your plenty you do not forget YaHWeH your God 10 When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise YaHWeH your God for the good land He has given you. 11 “But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget YaHWeH your God and disobey His commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today.
24
8:12-14 12 For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, 13 and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful! 14 Do not become proud at that time and forget YaHWeH your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.
25
8:15-20 15 Do not forget that He… 17 He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’ 18 Remember YaHWeH your God… “It is easy to get so busy collecting and managing wealth that we push God tight out of our lives.” Life Application Bible
26
8:14-17 Do not become proud at that time and forget YaHWeH your God 14 Do not become proud at that time and forget YaHWeH your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt… ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’ 17 He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’
27
Luke 12:13–21 NLT “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” Then he told them a story: “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’ Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods.
28
Luke 12:13–21 NLT And I’ll sit back and say to myself, ‘My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!’ ‘But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’ ‘Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”

2 Timothy 3:1–5 NIV 84 terrible times lovers of themselves, lovers of money… not lovers of the good…lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money… not lovers of the good…lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. (LB “They will go to church, yes, but they won’t really believe anything they hear.”)

John Adams unbridled by morality and religion Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

“The handwriting is on the wall. What the United States of America needs is another Holy Spirit revival that will put conviction back into the pulpits and pews; conscience back into government; common sense, decency, and discipline back into the schools; integrity back into business;

John Phillips commitment back into marriage; shame back into sin; courage back into the courts; character back into our leaders; safety back into the streets; purpose back into our youth; and God back into our national consciousness. Such a revival is the answer to our shame.”

Joel 2:12–13 NLT Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. “That is why YaHWeH says, “Turn to Me now, while there is time. Give Me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.” Return to YaHWeH your God, for He is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.”

1 Timothy 2:1–4 NIV 84 “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”
