3 History -Founded in 1630 by governor, John Winthrop -Located in modern-day central New England -Major Cities: Boston, Quincy, Plymouth, Salem, Lexington, Concord - Major Industries: Agriculture and Manufacturing “We shall be as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us.” ~ J.W.

4 Government -John Winthrop had 8 assistants that made up his council and were in the General Court -Form of Government: Established as Charter Colony and later became a Theocracy -Only people that could vote: White adult males who were members of the Congregational Church

6 Culture -Literacy rates were high -Women were excluded -Church was the most important -Follow the rules and live peacefully -Meeting House was in the center of town

7 The New England Way -John Cotton - “Congregational” -Ultimate power is “God’s Word” -Congregation should be self-sufficient

8 Religion -The Puritans mainly believed in the theory of Predestination -There was no religious freedom in the areas they inhabited -One couldn’t choose their own salvation -The Puritans kept true to their divine law by doing everything in moderation -Even those who were predestined for salvation couldn’t escape the tradition of divine law

9 Economy -Major Exports: Fish, Lumber, Domestic Beef, Ships, and Furs. -Imports: Certain foods, Tools, Clothing, sugar, slaves, and refined goods. -Not suitable for extensive plantations, smaller, diverse farms were common (subsistence farming) -Slavery is present, but not on the scale of other colonies and the West Indies.

10 Native American Relations -Massachusetts was first inhabited by many groups of Native Americans until European settlers arrived -Trade relations were beneficial for both groups -However, tensions arose between the groups and led to two different wars being fought -Pequot War - (1636 - 1637) -King Philip’s War - (1675 - 1676)

11 People -John Cotton (1585-1652)- Popular “teacher” of the First Church of Boston, he was a very influential figure. -John Winthrop (1588-1649)- A founder of the colony, Winthrop was the first governor of Massachusetts Bay.

12 Events 1629- Massachusetts Bay Company receives charter to settle and trade. 1675-76- King Phillip’s War between Puritan settlers and Native Americans. 1684- The charter from 1629 is revoked. 1686- Dominion of New england is established. 1691- A new charter deems Massachusetts Bay a royal colony.
