14 Powering Interlock System V2.0 for sc magnets MOTIVATION: Design dating back to 2004, operating since 2005. Several electronic components have become obsolete. - CPLD and HMS Anybus I/O modules not produced anymore - Aging of power supplies and optocouplers (>10 years of operation in areas exposed to radiation) - SIEMENS announced discontinuation of CPU 319 series NEW FEATURES: -Improve dependability (redundant reading of current loops, redundant links to Beam Interlock System, …) -Enhance monitoring of safety critical hardware current loops -Improve maintainability of the system 14 A. 18 Consolidation of the LHC Quench Detection Systems MOTIVATION: Design of important part of electronics dating back to late ‘90, operating since 2007. Electronic components become successively obsolete. Original baseline assumed minimum number of spare parts and subsequent replacement of electronic boards (ca. 16000 boards in total) in function of the obsolesces of the components and/or their vulnerability to radiation induced phenomena Ongoing process After LS1 the main concerns are: vulnerability of the field-bus coupler chip of the MICROFIP type Obsolesce of several quench detection boards New DAQ systems based on the new radiation tolerant NanoFip are planned to be implemented Replacement of several board families is mandatory in order to eliminate obsolesce of the components and to improve their radiation tolerance 18 A. 22 Main Failure causes 1- Loosening of holding coil mechanism Weak design of U-shaped support structure 2- Micro-switch not actuated Tolerances in dimensions of housing 3- Main axle fixation Weakness during production – failure rate not increasing so far 22 A. 23 Why worry after LS1?  Manufacturer closed premises in 2012 and the production suspended  Breakers are now obsolete  Still 60 spare breakers available  Spare consumption rate (before LS1) approx. 10/year 6 years of operation !!  Spare consumption rate after LS1 is under evaluation 23 A. 30 Conclusions 30 MPE is proceeding as a function of allocated resources with the renovation of interlocks in the accelerator complex Priorities of renovation need to be agreed (to take into account physics priorities) and must be coherent with other renovation programmes (mainly TE-EPC and EN-EL) MPE proposal is to complete main proton/ion chain until end LS2 Experimental facilities until end LS3 Due to successive obsolesce of electronic components consolidation of the LHC magnet protection systems is a continuous process In case of the quench detection electronics it is not easy to decouple “pure consolidation” from R2E upgrades Bankruptcy and closure of premises of Russian manufacturer of unique 600A energy extraction breakers forces us to develop an alternative solution A.
