2 Cuba / Spanish American War
Why did the United States go to war with Spain? (p ) Because a US Ship the USS Maine exploded in Havana harbor. The United States press blamed the Spanish even though they had no proof (Yellow Journalism) How did Theodore Roosevelt become a hero? (p. 556) He formed a special army unit called the “Rough Riders” They won a major battle at San Juan Hill. What countries did the United States control after the war?(p. 557) Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Phillipines, Guam, and other islands in the Pacific and Caribbean What did the Platt Amendment do? (p.560) allowed the United States to control Cuba even though it was independent

3 Hawaii (p ) Who was the ruler of Hawaii? Queen Liliokalani What did the Americans on the island do when she tried to take control of Hawaii? The American planters and missionaries revolted and overthrew her. They formed the Republic of Hawaii. What did the United States do in 1898? Annexed Hawaii

4 Panama Canal (p ) How did Theodore Roosevelt and Ambassador Bunau-Varilla help Panama become independent? Bunau- Varilla organized a Panamanian revolt against Columbia. Roosevelt sent warships to do “military exercises” off the coast of Panama. Columbia got the message and allowed Panama to be independent. What is “Big Stick Diplomacy?” The Roosevelt Corollary is an example of this. Diplomacy backed with the threat of military force if the US does not get what it wants.

5 China (p ) Which countries tried to control China? Great Britain, Russia, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States What were the Open Door Notes (Policy)? A series of policy statements which declared that no single nation will have a monopoly over trade with China and that China will remain independent (but is it really?) What did the Boxers hope to do in their rebellion? Free China from European and American control and domination. The “Boxers” tried to kill all “Western White Devils” within their borders. The United States, Great Britain, France and Japan put down the rebellion.
