9 This painting was completed circa 1845 by George Caleb Bingham (1811–1879), a famous American painter. In 1845, Bingham journeyed west and painted scenes of frontier life along the rivers. His paintings featured not only the landscape, but the people: bargemen, fur traders, and pioneers.
