Human Body Systems Review – Week of 3/7 – 3/11

Our focus this week… We will review our notes and understanding of unicellular and multicellular organisms and how they work and survive. We will review how the different body systems are organized and how they work together.

Day 1: What is a cell? During today’s lesson, we will review our notes on cells. We will look at the different types of organisms and characteristics of each.

What is a cell? Cell: the basic unit of life; the building blocks of life All living things are made up of cells!

Unicellular v. Multicellular Unicellular: composed of only ONE cell; single-celled organisms Able to carry out ALL of life’s processes through a single-cell! Examples: –protists, fungi, amoeba, bacteria, some algae are unicellular Multicellular: composed of several or many cells Specialized cells – Division of Labor – each cell is responsible for his one duty Examples: –Humans –Animals –Plants

What is a Cell? Read the comprehension selection and answer the questions that follow for a grade.

Day 2: Guest Speaker

Day 3: Review of Test Questions Today’s lesson will walk us through several questions from our Benchmark tests that all of the fifth grade students found difficult. Our focus will be on breaking down the question and vocabulary, as well as looking for the correct answer.

Before looking at the answer choices, stop and ask yourself, what are unicellular organisms able to do?

Notice the question is only focused on unicellular organisms and individual cells. Ignore the concept of multicellular organisms for this question.

This question was on last week’s review – try it this time without help!

The word “Euglena” is unfamiliar to many of us. Do we need to focus on the word or does the question give us clues as to what it is so that we do not need to worry about the word itself? What is the question really asking?

What is the key word in this question? NOT!

For the next several questions, open your inquiry journal to the diagrams you have of animal and plant cells to help you.

Day 4: Quiz and Vocabulary Review With the substitute, you will complete your review quiz on cells. Afterwards, you will create a 4 square for unicellular and multicellular. The layout is below. word DefinitionIllustratio n Example s Use the word in a sentence.

Day 5: Go over quiz & Probe Today’s lesson has 2 parts. We will begin by going over yesterday’s quiz. The second part of the lesson will be a probe to help you begin thinking about our study of the body systems next week.

Digestive System Probe Using the document camera, display the probe “Digestive System”. Read the probe together as a class. Allow students time to think and jot their ideas in their science notebooks. After a few minutes, discuss everyone’s thoughts. Suggested answers and reasoning are on the next slide.

Reasoning for “Digestive System” Sasha has the best answer. The digestive system has two main roles – while Harriet is correct the digestive system does break food down into small pieces – she does not completely explain the role of the DS. Mina’s answer is incorrect because the DS does not release energy from food, instead it breaks food down into molecules that can be absorbed by cells and used to release energy from the cell.
