3 Edward Bellamy & Looking Backward  In 1889, Bellamy’s Looking Backward is published  The novel promoted socialism (nationalism) by writing of a utopian society in the year 2000  Plot  Julian West falls asleep in 1887 and awakes 113 years later  Doctor Leete guides Julian through the new America  All industries are nationalized  An Industrial Army produces and distributes  All goods distributed equally to citizens  Everyone retires at age 45

4 Edward Bellamy & Looking Backward  Key Points  The state should guarantee economic security to all  Freedom was a social condition placed upon interdependence, not autonomy  Liberty is not achieved by freeing oneself from governmental restriction  Legacy  Bellamy’s ideas were deemed radical & deemed as a threat to social order  Over 160 “Bellamy Clubs” emerged to discuss and propagate Bellamy’s ideas  Influenced reformers, such as the Progressives, and 20 th century intellectuals
