ALMA and FP6 Opportunities and strategy Funded project – construction phase 2003-2011 FP6 timeframe 2003 – 2007. Good timing - first science planned for 2007! Foster and structure European Astronomical Community around ALMA project - PREPARATION Competition with USA in best use of ALMA Organise Regional Support Centre – funded 2006 NETWORKING Access present European facilities – TRAINING Technical development – high frequency receivers and components.

The instrument 64 x 12m antennas 7200 sq.m collecting area Frequency range 30 – 900 GHz Baselines to 14 km (10 mas resolution) Site Llano Chajnantor; altitude 5050m Completion date: end 2011 Cost €600M ALMA Europe – US partnership

ALMA science ’Origins’ Prototgalaxies out to z~20 – the epoch of first galaxy formation Protostars – detailed study of all phases of stellar (and planet) formation Major impact on all areas of astronomy: mm/submm equivalent of VLT and HST – similar high angular resolution but unhindered by dust opacity Will make mm/submm astronomy accessible to all astronomers

ALMA and FP6 Possible directions Strengthen collaboration among institutes to build a strong European network for future ALMA users Train upcoming generations of ALMA users in milimetre techniques Develop state of the art tools for data analysis Foster technical research and development of ADVANCED Instruments for ALMA

ALMA and FP 6 Opportunities within the FP6 Research Infrastructures Coordination and organisiation of ALMA activities throughout Europe – NETWORKING in I-3 ALMA to have a European Support Centre; We need to develop a network of experts to develop sofware tools and support local communities of users in proposal writing and data analysis to make best, competitive use of ALMA.

ALMA and FP 6 Opportunities within the FP6 Research Infrastructures Optimise use of the powerful set of European mm/submm facilities by opening them up to a wider community as part of TRANSNATIONAL ACCESS scheme. IRAM – 30m and Interferometer on PdeB; JCMT -15 m submm telescope; Onsala – 20m mm telescope SEST – 15m submm telescope in Chile APEX – a new submm antenna on ALMA site

ALMA and FP6 Opportunities within the FP6 Research Infrastructures Coordinated effort in exploration of HIGHER performance techniques in mm/submm receivers: 1.At component level –SIS junction development and production –Improved IF amplifiers through better transistors, eg InP instead of GaAs 2. At system level by development of innovative schemes for better (lower noise) performance. eg side-band separation schemes

ALMA and FP6 Opportunities within the FP6 Research Infrastructures Training of the future ALMA community – astronomers with no experience of radio interferometry - through workshops, conferences, etc. Training of younger astronomers (postdocs, etc) through fellowships and visitors programme. Could be organised through a separate RTN proposal.

ALMA and FP6 Schedule and strategy Working Group in action Discussing relationships with Opticon and RadioNet – Sept 16/17 and 23/24 resp. Visit to Brussel (M.Malacarne) October Discussion meeting in Garching –Nov 8 Working Group meets – Leiden, Dec 18/19

ALMA and FP 6 Summary 1. Networking + coordination –Proto RSC 2. Transnational access to existing facilities 3. Software development – incl high level analysis and coupling to eg radiative transfer tools for modeling 4. R&D on high frequency receivers 5. SIS junction fabrication 6. Band 1 design and production 7. Workshops; summer schools and conferences

ALMA and FP 6 Cost summary 1.Proto RSC coord and management200k€ 2.Transnational access (say 2 facilities)500k€ 3.Software300k€ 4.Receiver R&D400k€ 5.Junction fabrication200k€ 6.Workshops and summer schools 50k€ 7.Band 1 ( 31-45 GHz): poss collaboration with Chile. Total cost 130 receivers: 5M€
