This refers to the lightness or darkness of something. This could be a shade or how dark or light a colour appears. Tones are created by the way light falls on a 3D object. The parts of the object on which the light is strongest are called highlights and the darker areas are called shadows. There will a range of tones in between the highlights and shadows.

3 Roy Lichtenstein Answer the questions in your sketchbook. Then try to recreate on of the images. He uses bold vivid lines and colour. Ensure you are creating this with your coloured pencil.

8 Portraiture  A portrait is ‘a painting, drawing, photograph, or engraving of a person, depicting only the face or head and shoulders’  The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person.  Expression is key. You can tell a persons wealth, class and mood by one image.  The oldest known portrait in the world comes from Czech Republic. It shows a woman face and was made from mammoth ivory and is about 26,000 years old.  The most common portrait today would be the ‘Selfie’

9 Mona Lisa – Leonardo da Vinci. The most famous painting in the world is the main attraction of the Louvre museum inParis, where it is seen by six million people every year! Leonardo da Vinci painted it from the year 1503 or 1504 till shortly before he died in 1519 Louvre museumParis Girl With A Pearl Earring – Johannes Vermeer. Considered by many to be “the Dutch Mona Lisa” or the “Mona Lisa of the North”, this beautiful painting by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer features, well… a girl with a pearl earring. The painting was completed around 1665 and is on display in the Mauritshuis Gallery in the Hague, the Netherlands

10 Self-Portrait Without Beard – Vincent van Gogh. Even though Van Gogh painted many portraits of himself, this one is by far the most famous as it is his last self-portrait and one of the few that depicts him without a beard. It was given by him to his mother as a birthday gift. It is also one of the most expensive paintings of all times, as it was sold for $71.5 million in 1998, and is now part of a private collection Portrait of Henry VIII is a lost work by Hans Holbein the Younger depicting Henry VIII. While destroyed by fire in 1698 it is still well known today through many copies. It is one of the most iconic images of Henry and is one of the most famous portraits of any British monarch. 24 Gustav Klimt Gustav Klimt, born in 1862, use of texture and patterns in painting built his reputation as a famous Austrian artist. Today, his paintings are quite familiar and hardly seem shocking to our modern eyes. However, in his time he was seen as a very controversial artist, and his work received violent criticism. So much so that a number of his paintings were often hidden behind, preventing a younger audience from catching a glimpse.
