PREPARING CTS FOR THE UPCOMING EDTPA EDTPA SUPPORT FOR COOPERATING TEACHERS

AGENDA Warm-up—What Do You Know? What Have You Heard? And Where Did You Hear It? edTPA—What it is AND Why we use it edTPA Project Organization CT and Supervisor Roles in Project Our Student Successes and Struggles(key features) Important Semester Checkpoints/Tips Closure—Do You Feel Better About It? Contact Info

WHAT AND WHY EDTPA edTPA Website - http://edtpa.aacte.org/http://edtpa.aacte.org/ edTPA is a Teacher Performance Assessment created by SCALE and initiated by Pearson. It measures student teacher candidates ability and growth in the areas of planning, instructing, assessing, and reflecting. Currently 36 states and 668 Education Programs within are participating at varying levels. (Map) http://edtpa.aacte.org/state-policy http://edtpa.aacte.org/state-policy Currently NC universities are participating and using as a component of the Student Teaching Grade (UNCC =15%). As early as Spring 2017 the project could be required for licensure.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF EDTPA

EDTPA PROJECT ORGANIZATION ELED (18 Rubrics) Task 1—Literacy Planning (5 rubrics) Task 2—Literacy Instruction (5 Rubrics)(Video) Task 3—Literacy Assessment (5 Rubrics) Task 4—Math Assessments (3 Rubrics) All Other Programs (except FLED) Task 1—Planning (5 Rubrics) Task 2—Instruction (5 Rubrics) (Video) Task3—Assessment (5 Rubrics) FLED candidates scored on 13 Rubrics

SUPPORTING ROLES INFO Let’s discuss how to support candidates as either Cooperating Teachers or University Supervisors We have a handout on this as well as a link to a specific information site for edTPA support. We will briefly discuss: 1.Acceptable Supports 2.Unacceptable Supports Direct website: https://secure.aacte.org/apps/rl/res_get.php?fid=162 2&ref=edtpa https://secure.aacte.org/apps/rl/res_get.php?fid=162 2&ref=edtpa

STUDENT SUCCESS Currently students across ALL participating programs are scoring the highest on Task 2—Instruction. This is the Video Teaching Segment—some programs have 1 clip others have 2 clips BUT all are limited to 20 minutes of unedited footage. Our Candidates are excelling at creating rapport with students and offering a comfortable and challenging learning environment. We can IMPROVE the Analysis of Teaching though where students are asked to consider changes to instruction to improve and even refer to pedagogical research.

STUDENT STRUGGLES Currently students across ALL participating programs are scoring the lowest in Task 3— Assessing. Support Faculty have pinpointed the areas of need in Task 3 as being the following: 1. Creating Authentic Assessments directly linked to the Central Focus and the Academic Language. 2.The Feedback that candidates are providing to their students is not focused enough. 3. Using the Assessment to Inform Instruction or the changes that candidates might make based on the results for groups and individuals.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? The struggles listed previously are being addressed programmatically BUT we could use your help by: Helping develop the Central Focus around the Academic Language Function (action verbs) as well as making sure those action verbs are driving assessments. Model how to give focused and authentic feedback to students. Teach candidates to use the assessment criteria or rubric to drive feedback. Discuss results of any formal assessments with candidates and zero in on areas that could be improved for both the whole class and specific students. Encourage them to make adjustments and not scrap assessments they believe failed.

BECOMING A SCORER AND WHAT DOES IT ENTAIL Pearson is always looking for scorers. If you are interested visit this site to apply: http://scoreedtpa.pearson.com/ There is approximately 30 hours of self directed training modules and scoring activities. Slightly more for ELED- Math. The pay is $10.10/hr for the training. It takes about 4 weeks to complete the training and an additional 2 weeks to score practice portfolios. If you qualify you will then be able to begin scoring candidate projects and at that time the pay is approximately $75/project. Projects take about 3 hours to score.

DO YOU FEEL BETTER NOW? What are your Feelings/Concerns about the project? Are you Confident you can assist your ST? What Questions do you still have? Contact Info: Tom Fisher MDSK tefisher@uncc.edutefisher@uncc.edu Melinda McCabe ELED mmccabe3@uncc.edummccabe3@uncc.edu

LAST WORD Remind Candidates that the project, while it entails commentaries and videos, is still focused on best teaching practices. Quality Lesson Planning Engaging Instruction Authentic Assessment Upcoming Supports: 3/18-Screencast on navigating Pearson Site and Upload 3/21-edTPA Q&A Panel with Scorers ALL programs are welcome for both!
