3 Context The B.C. College & University System Outline BC’s public post-secondary institutions: 5 Research Universities 3 Institutes 1 Open University – Distance programs only 4 Teaching Universities 12 Colleges

4 About VCC One of the largest colleges Approximately 700 instructors Approximately 25,000 students annually Bachelor degrees in Nursing, Hospitality, and Music and Performing Arts University transfer (1 st & 2 nd year liberal arts) Career and vocational programs English as a Second Language Adult Upgrading (ABE)

5 About the VCCFA 1951 – Established to represent vocational instructors Represents instructors, librarians & counsellors 1990 – joined provincial organization, the Federation of Post Secondary Educators (FPSE) 60% of membership is “regular” – full & part time 40% of membership are “term” or “auxiliary”

6 VCCFA Guiding Principles Accept that there will be differences between ourselves and administration Believe that rights are won through bargaining, grievance and arbitration processes Try to maintain good working relationship with our new administration Believe that teaching and learning are the core activities of our institution and that faculty are the experts in those areas

7 H ow we work Leadership Positions include – President – Vice President – Chief Steward 10 person Executive Board 12 person steward group 6 person bargaining committee (established during bargaining years only)

8 About FPSE Umbrella organization representing colleges, teaching universities and institutes Research universities don't belong Provides legal and staff support Governed by elected executive officers and council of presidents Local faculty associations have bargaining certification for their own members Locals bargain local issues locally Salary increases are usually settled provincially

9 Terminology Instructor : – Instructors, librarians and counsellors Permanent Regular : – Tenured Probationary Regular: – Tenure track Term: – Sessional, adjunct, or contingent Auxiliary: – Substitute or on-call Time Status: – Full time or portion in an appointment (50%, 25%, etc.)

10 Our Belief in Equity for All Instructors Try to eliminate differences All are faculty, regardless of time status All are faculty regardless of whether term or regular Full rights for those half time or more VCCFA models equity in how the union works Active VCCFA non-regular committee

11 Rights for Term Instructors One salary scale Regularization Seniority Rights Workload language covers all Professional Development Benefits available for those half time or more Medical, vacation and insurance benefits Maternity Leave
