Alcy R. Torres, MD Director of the Pediatric Concussion Program Boston Medical Center/Boston University 2016 WUSC Concussion Policy “A brief introduction”
10
Introduction Traumatic brain injury represents 30% of all injury deaths Every day, 138 people in the USA die from injuries that include TBI Most TBIs are mild “concussions” 3.8m/year Concussion account for 1 in 10 Sports injuries 5-8% of patients with concussions develop postconcussive syndrome Faul M., CDC 2010
11
Definition Is a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain, induced by traumatic biomechanical forces. A form of TBI Result of Rapid Rotation Functional, not structural (Zurich 2009)
12
Symptoms of Concussion SCAT3 – Headache – Dizziness – Feeling in a fog – Nausea – Poor Balance – Double or poor vision – Fatigue – Poor Memory Ding, Seeing Stars, Bell Rung = Concussion
13
WUSC Concussion Policy Take the course at the CDC website Sit the player if you suspect a concussion Notify the parents Notify the age group coordinator in writing Players are not allowed to return without medical clearance
14
Once symptom free, start return‐to‐play stages
15
BAYS/US Soccer Changes Heading In U12 and younger play, if in the opinion of the referee, a player deliberately heads or attempts to head the ball, an indirect free-kick is awarded to the opposing team. If that deliberate header or attempt to head the ball occurs in the goal area, the indirect free- kick will be taken on the goal area line (6 yard box) parallel to the goal line nearest to where the infringement occurred. If, in the opinion of the referee, a player does not deliberately head or attempt to head the ball, then play should continue. There will be no heading for U12 and below in practices Advantage Rules will apply, but be patient with referees as this is very new so mistakes will happen.
16
BAYS/US Soccer Changes Zero Tolerance Green cards have been given to referees for use when Zero Tolerance infractions occur Infractions can be called on coaches and parents Recommendation by BAYS to give the following punishment to coaches who infringe on Zero Tolerance: 1 (minor) to 3 (severe) rating system 2 rated issue – Coach must issue an apology from the coach to the referee through the assignor or club rep 3 rated issue – Coach is suspended for one game All player pass cards will now be kept by the referee in case of issue
17
Practices Use Director of Coaching (DOC) curriculum with practice plans from WUSC website DOC and PDO staff available to help with practices Contact Lewis Wright with requests - lwright@globalpremiersoccer.comlwright@globalpremiersoccer.com Support DOC/PDO by helping develop practice plan for assisted session and providing post-practice feedback when requested Practices: recommend 1-2 practices per week – Choose day/time/location that works for coach and players – Scheduling practice and field availability – Please use system to schedule all practices, instructions in fields section of web site – Those with practices scheduled will be notified if field is not available – Do NOT “turn up” to a field if not reserved
18
Curriculum We recommend that all practice sessions follow the S.C.O.R.E. method: S IMPLE. Stick to one theme during your practice session. Choose 2 or 3 core coaching points and reinforce them throughout the session. C HALLENGING. Ensure that the players are posed problems that they need to find solutions to. Provide guidance and help when they need it. O RGANISED. Plan every detail of your session - how many players, space and equipment. Ensure that your sessions have the appropriate pace and progression to challenge all of your players. R ELEVANT. Ensure that the exercises in your session are relevant to the game. E NJOYABLE. The players should walk away from every practice having thoroughly enjoyed the session and learning at least one new aspect of the game. Friday is most popular practice nights!
22
Fields - General Points (2) Please have your team pick up all trash after practice and games (including orange peels) – Pay particular attention at Elm Bank, which is a carry in/carry out facility Please do not use goal mouths for practice on grass fields – Move goal off end lines, play in between fields if possible Return goals to original location if moved for practice Schofield will not be used for games this season but is available for practice. Sprague games on field 2 and 3 (turf) pick up and return corner flags and their bases after late games
23
Goal & Net Safety Always inspect goals before each match and/or practice. Always ensure goals are secured with sand bags on back bar or sidebars – 8v8 min 1 sand bag on back bar – 11v11 2 sand bags on back bar – 6v6 grass field goals do not need sand bags Never allow anyone to climb or play on the goal or net Never allow anyone to hang on the goal crossbar (e.g. chin-ups) Movable goals should only be used on level (flat) fields. Instruct players on safe handling and potential dangers associated with movable goals. – Coaches and/or parents should move goals; not youth players – When moving wheels should be rotated to allow easy moving. When in place replace wheels so frame contacts ground. – Push when ever possible, do not pull goals – Do not move with sand bags on back bar however replace sand bags when moved
