1 Middle School Scheduling Information Transitioning and Staying on track at Westfall Middle School

2 W estfall M iddle S chool Our motto for the middle school is: W estfall M iddle S chool – W e M odel S uccess We encourage students to model success in everything they do. We also use E+R=O as a decision framework to all events for students and staff.

3 Hours The office is open at 7am – Please call in any student absence– you can leave a message on voicemail before 7am Tardy bell rings at 7:35am – student drop-off/pick- up is on the side of the building We release at 2:30pm. First day of school for students – August 19

4 Middle School Requirements Every student will register for: Language Arts class, Math, Science and Social Studies Every student will also receive: Art, Technology and Physical Education Other courses might include: Pathways to Success – a career & college-readiness course exploring career options and developing soft skills Extension – a grade-level course for students to extend the standards covered by the extension teacher

5 Math Lab Students are placed in Math Lab based on achievement test results. This is an extra period of math each day to support and extend the content in mathematics. This course is graded and placement is based on achievement scores.

6 Points In order to pass a course students must receive at least 4 points for the year, 2 points must be earned during the 3 rd and 4 th 9 weeks A=4 points, B=3 points, C=2 points, & D=1 point In order to be promoted to the next grade students must pass a minimum of 3 courses Academic progress can easily be tracked using ProgressBook – it is crucial students and parents know how to access ProgressBook

8 Absences 5 UNEXCUSED absences will result in Truancy Court Intervention It is important to please CALL-IN your child’s absence – this may only be done 5 times – any more than 5 absences require a doctor’s note If you have been to truancy court already a referral will be made to directly to the Pickaway County Juvenile Prosecutor Truancy charges will be filed when a student misses 12- 15 days of school without an excuse; once filed upon you must appear in Juvenile Court

9 Tardiness/Early Dismissal Student will be allowed 2 tardies/early dismissals per semester; students are tardy anytime past 7:35am When a student receives 3 tardies and/or early dismissals a lunch detention will be assigned When a student receives 4 tardies and/or early dismissals an after-school detention (2:30 – 5pm) will be assigned. It is the responsibility of the student and his/her family to provide transportation from after school detention.

10 Tardiness to Class Students will have 3 minutes to transition between classes The first and second offenses for being tardy will be a lunch detention The third offense for being tardy to class will result in an after-school detention Further offenses will result in an office referral

11 and Bullying Students are not permitted to use wireless devices during school hours – they are to be kept in your locker Teachers may confiscate cell phones or other electronic devices if they are out during school hours Unacceptable use of cell phones or other devices is subject to disciplinary action, and includes: - using profanity, obscenity or other language which may be offensive to another user or intended to harass, intimidate or bully other users -sexting or forwarding messages received from another student with pornographic content/material

12 Testing at the Middle School Ohio Department of Education requires the following tests for (American Institutes of Research – AIR) Middle School in April/May : 6 – Social Studies, Math, English/Language Arts 7 – Math, English/Language Arts 8 – Science, Math, English Language Arts Westfall District also uses: Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing 3 times per school year Our building also conducts: End of 9-weeks assessments in all courses

13 Clubs at Westfall Middle School Westfall Transformers– does work to improve the positive environment and help ensure “chain reactions of kindness” continue Student Council –plan and organize school activities such as school dances and spirit week Art Club – works with Art Teacher to extend projects and concepts explored in Visual Arts Sports –cheerleading, football, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, and boys and girls track – Open to 7 th and 8 th Grade students only, ELIGIBILITY Future Problem Solvers & Math Counts

14 Music @ Westfall Choir - Self selected; we have 2 choirs (Red and Gray choir) Band – Self selected; This is every day and with grade level
