Why we join CMS? Our joining to CMS collaboration aims to:  Establish experimental expertise for LHC accelerator spare parts and high standard electronic equipment.  Develop simulation techniques that have environmental and industrial impact.  Take a leading part in the expected revolution in particle physics. To promote scientific collaboration between researchers and Egyptian academic institutions. To train young scientists in Experimental and Theory of particle physics and Data analysis, etc. To connect with one of the most challenging international collaborations. 3

Egyptian Network of HEP Egypt has a bilateral agreement with CERN since 2006 for in the enormous LHC project. In September 2008, the Egyptian Network for High Energy Physics (ENHEP) has been established, as a research unit within the Academic Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT). Shabaan Khalil is the ENHEP Director. The aim of the ENHEP is to act as the nucleus for the scientific cooperation between the Egyptian experts in HEP and CERN in the LHC project. In September 2008, President of the ASRT and Shabaan have visited CERN to discuss the working plan in order to join CMS. In September 2009, President of the ASRT and Shabaan have visited CERN and reported the progress made in setting up RPC lab and Grid computational infrastructure. With the CMS spokesman and resource manger, we have signed a letter of intention that specify Egypt contribution to CMS. 4

Our contribution include the following items:  Purchase of materials for a number (~ 25) of forward RPC chambers to be assembled at CMS site.  Training and support of a number of qualified Egyptian personnel for assembly of muon chambers at CMS site.  Completion of the instrumentation of a laboratory to allow full testing of a number of RPC chambers in Egypt. We have obtained the approval of our government on these items and payment. Shabaan have presented Egypt application to the CMS council meeting on 11 Dec. In March 2010 we got the approval of the counsel meeting voting 69 against 2 (we are official member). 5

ENHEP Structure The ENHEP is running under the umbrella of the ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the ASRT. The ENHEP consists of the three groups:  Particle Physics Phenomenology (theory group)  Computational and Data Analysis ( data analysis group)  Experimental Particle Physics (experimental group) 6 UniversityBUECairoHelwanAin Shams NodePhenom. & Analysis Analysis & Exp. 7 Dr. Adel Awad (BUE) –Coordinator We are expert in Physics beyond the SM: SUSY, CP violation, Extra Dimensions, TeV scale B-L extension of SM, etc. We organized series of lectures in particle physics, relativistic quantum mechanics and field theory in ENHEP meetings. ENHEP organized, with the ASRT and the IN2P3, the 1 st Egyptian School on High Energy Physics in May 2009 at British University in Egypt (BUE).. 7 Theory Group The first Egyptian School on high Energy Physics (supported by ASRT & IN2P3) May- June 2009 at BUE

Theory members published about 20 articles in the last year with ENHEP- ASRT acknowledgment. We organized a conference on neutrino physics in LHC that has been held in Luxur in November 2009. This is part of in going biannual meetings in LHC physics suggested by LHC theory group (John Ellis). ENHEP organized, with the ASRT and the IN2P3, the 2 ed Egyptian School on High Energy Physics in Nov. 2010 at Helwan University in Egypt.the 2 ed Egyptian School on High Energy Physics in Nov. 2010 We awarded 2 research grant from ASRT and 2 grants from STDF. We are collaborating with LLR, NEXT. 8 CTP Int. Conference on Neutrino Physics at LHC Era: 15-19 Nov. 2009 Luxor. We have also organized SUSY at LHC Era in 2007 & DSU 2008 Theory Group

Our model of New Physics beyond the Standard Model at CMS CMS is looking for physics beyond the Standard Model including the TeV scale B-L extension proposed recently by members of the CTP in “Low scale B – L extension of the Standard Model at the LHC” by S.K., J. Phys. G 35:055001, 2008. Two groups in the CMS collaboration working at the LHC project (one at the Ecole Polytechnique in France and the other in the NEXT institute, Southampton UK) have analyzed the discovery potential for our model. Now we are collaborating with NEXT to analysis SUSY B-L model. 9

Prof. Ali Ellithi (Cairo U.) –Coordinator Two computational labs at BUE (Amr Radi) and Cairo University (Ali Ellithi) have been established. Efforts have been made for understanding Data analysis tools, as CMSSW program- generation- simulation- reconstruction- analysis. Software including Pythia, Root, Genat4, Calhep, CMSshow, etc. 11 HEP school (supported by ASRT & IN2P3) May-June 2009 at BUE Data Analysis Group

Building grid nodes at different places (BUE, Cairo,..) with necessary hardware and bandwidth useful for Tier3. ENHEP Established a high performance computational lab, 32 core main frame + 8 Sun ultra 4-core machines and more than10 high configuration pc’s in the BUE (internet high speed connect). M. Attia and S. Seif are 2 Ph.D. students at CERN for data analysis. The focus will be on Exotica analysis. 12 HEP school (supported by ASRT & IN2P3) May-June 2009 at BUE Data Analysis Group

GRID Applications 13

Detector Laboratory (experimental group) Dr. A. Mahrous (Helwan U.) - coordinator. Expertise in Helwan and Cairo Univ. Our RPC group is working closely to the RPC Lab in CERN. We have a monthly video conference with CERN RPC group to follow the progress of our tests. New collaboration with Bari U. (G. Iaselli). Y. Assran & A. Mostafa are 2 Ph.D. students (100%) at CERN RPC Lab. 14 Visit of A. Sharma to Helwan Detector Lab

Experimental tests: (i) The gas Leakage Test. (ii) The High Voltage Test. (iii) The Spacer Test. (iv) The Cosmic Ray Test. A. Mahrous, M. Sherif, and M. Soliman, Simulation of Muon- Induced Air Showers Affecting CMS Tracking Detectors, Physics of Particles and Nuclei Letters, 2009, Vol. 6, No. 3, pp. 246–250. 15

Conclusions Why we join CMS? The ENHEP is running under the umbrella of the ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the ASRT. The ENHEP consists of the three groups:  Particle Physics Phenomenology (Theory group)  Computational and Data Analysis  Experimental Particle Physics Supporting the ENHEP with annual budget is crucial to achieve our goals. ENHEP is first trial for team working in Egypt. 16

Acknowledgment We would like to thanks Philippe Miné (LLR) and Ludwik Dobrzynski (LLR) for their helps and supports for us to join CMS experiments and many other things etc. 17
