A: Types of Registration General Medical Council (GMC) It is where all the doctors in the UK registered so as to manage and treat patients. What are the types of registration in the UK? Provision registration: It is for doctors who have just qualified from a medical school from EEA. Full registration It is for doctors who have completed their year’s clinical training. Limited registration It is for international medical graduates who have not completed the equivalent of a year’s clinical training in the UK. Specialist registration It is for those who have completed specialist medical training and have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)

B: PLAB (video) PLAB It is a Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board for some categories of overseas doctors to be registered. What is PLAB designed for? It is designed to ensure those who pass can practice safely at the level of an SHO in the first appointment in the UK. What are the parts of PLAB test? Part 1: Written test of knowledge, skills and attitude Part 2: Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) It consists of 16 five-minute clinical scenarios known as stations, to assess professional skills.

C: PLAB Stations and Advice OSCEs assess these skills: Clinical Examinations The ability to carry out a physical examinations of a simulated patient will be assessed. Uncomfortable and intimate examination will be on a manikin. Practical Skills There will assessments on a practical skills such as suturing and giving intravenous injections. Communication Skills The ability to interact with simulated patient, or the examiner, such as breaking bad news and giving advice on lifestyle. History Taking The ability to take accurate history and make a reasoned diagnosis will be assessed.
