6 Native American Reservations  An area of land legally designated, by the government, for Native Americans in which they have the authority to govern themselves  Pushed onto reservations in European settlers/American fight for more land and westward expansion

7 Native American Reservations  Many attempts to “Americanize” or anglicize Indians  People wanted the Native Americans to forget their languages and traditions and be more like European/Americans

9 Carlisle Schools  Indian boarding school in Pennsylvania that was government funded in hopes of “Americanizing” or anglicizing Native Americans  Changed their appearance, language, and tried to get ride of their Indian traditions  Indians were only allowed to go home at summer time

10 “From 1870 through 1918, Carlisle Indian Industrial School was the boarding school home for more than 10,000 American Indian children. At that time, education, discipline and general life at the school revolved around stripping the children of their tribal cultures and forcing assimilation into Euro-American society.”

11 Home to Medicine Mountain By Chiori Santiago Based on the true story of Benny Len and Stanley, two Native American boys who are taken from their tribe in Northern California and forced to attend a government-run Indian boarding school (much like the Carlisle school) in Southern California in the 1930s.
