2 Harlandale ISD Curriculum and Instruction 2010-2011 What is Dyslexia? International Dyslexia Assoc. definition Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impeded growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

4 Harlandale ISD Curriculum and Instruction 2010-2011 Misunderstandings about Dyslexia It does not exist; it’s merely a catch all term for learning problems Children have to be a certain age to be dyslexic It’s a visual problem-all dyslexics see and write letters and words backward Forcing a student to read every day will make him/her a better reader

5 Harlandale ISD Curriculum and Instruction 2010-2011 Misunderstandings about Dyslexia More boys than girls are dyslexic Dyslexics are clumsy, have trouble tying shoes, etc. Dyslexia affects only English speakers

21 Harlandale ISD Curriculum and Instruction 2010-2011 Social-Emotional Characteristics that May be Associated with Dyslexia Immaturity Missing the punch line in jokes Poor impulse control Frustration from the classroom that carries over into relationships Slow processing of conversational speech-difficulty following multi- speaker

22 Harlandale ISD Curriculum and Instruction 2010-2011 Social-Emotional Characteristics that May be Associated with Dyslexia Time and organization difficulties Lying/cheating to cover up mistakes or inadequacies Anxiety over schoolwork/homework I give up attitude Difficulty understanding rules of games or situations quickly Tendency to hold it in with school problems Difficulty coping with giftedness in some areas while needing remediation in others
