S UMMARY  GENERAL  INTRODUCTION  ACTIVITY 1 (WARM UP ACTIVITY)  Heart anatomy  ACTIVITY 2  Heart physiology  ACTIVITY 3  Risk factors for heart disease  EXTENSION  Review cardiovascular system

G ENERAL CLASS DESCRIPTION Nursing assistant students. Vocational education ENGLISH LEVEL minimun A2 level SUBJECT/UNIT Basic nursing procedures/Anatomy, physiology and pathology of the cardiovascular system TIME 2 hours

HEART PHYSIOLOGY. RISK FACTORS FOR HEART DISEASE

OBJECTIVES CONTENT To describe heart function To identify major risk factos for heart disease COMMUICATION To recognise scientific, specific vocabulary of circulatory system To use simple present to describe heart function To ask for questions, to discuss ideas

OBJECTIVES COGNITION To understand the relationship of the structures of the heart To recognise the importance of the correct function of the heart for health To associate life habits with risk factors for heart disease To evaluate strategies to reduce risk factors and prevent heart disease CULTURE To understand the relationship between today´s lifestyle and heart deisease

INTRODUCTION Your body is made up of trillions of living cells and every one of them needs food and oxygen to stay alive. It is the job of the circulatory system to transport food and oxygen to the cells and then to collect waste products so that they can be eliminated from the body. This system operates non-stop from before birth to death. If deprived of oxygen for just a few minutes, a cell will begin to die. This system is crucial to survival. The circulatory system is made up of three main parts or components: the heart, the blood, and the vessels through which the blood flows. In this lesson we will study how the heart works and the risks factors for heart disease. In this lesson you will have to do the three tasks that are uploaded in moodle.

ACTIVITY 1 HEART ANATOMY REVIEW Watch the animation on the heart and blood vessels http://www.texasheart.org/HIC/Anatomy/Anatomy.cfme http://www.texasheart.org/HIC/Anatomy/Anatomy.cfme http://www.texasheart.org/ProjectHeart/Kids/Anatomy_Anima tions.cfm  Label the different parts of the heart in the interactive diagram. http://sciencelearn.org.nz/Contexts/See-through- Body/Sci-Media/Animation/Label-the-heart. http://sciencelearn.org.nz/Contexts/See-through- Body/Sci-Media/Animation/Label-the-heart  Take the Hot Pot Quiz and the Jcross in Moodle to review the vocabulary of the heart  Deadline 20th February

H EART ANATOMY

ACTIVITY 2 Read the lesson in your text book about the heart function and the blood flow patterns. Read the file in moodle “How the heart works” Watch the following video heart function heart function

Answer the following questions and upload them to moodle 1. Name the valve that lies between the Right Atrium and Right Ventricle. 2. What is the name of the vein that returns deoxygenated blood to the heart? 3. The Left Ventricle pumps blood to the...... 4. What is the name for the tubular structures that mainly carry deoxygenated blood throughout the body? 5. Describe how the blood flow throug the heart. Deadline 20th of February

FINAL ACTIVITY Think about this question What might occur if the heart does not work properly? Watch the video about risk factors for heart disease risk factors

FINAL ACTIVITY Read the document explaining risk factors and fill in the gaps. Upload your answers to moodle.

FINAL ACTIVITY Think about changes in life style that help to prevent heart disease Look for information about risk factors on the internet. These web pages contain usuful information about the topic http://www.heart.org http://learn.fi.edu/learn/heart/healthy/healthy.html http://www.texasheart.org/HIC/his.cfm Write down your conclusions about changes in life style and share them in the forum in moodle Deadline 20th of February

EXTENSION To review their knowledge of the cardiovascular system, students are asked to complete the following webquest: https://magic.piktochart.com/output/4026162- cardiovascular-system#.VNtzm-uJZOs.blogger Deadline the end of the term

ASSESSMENT Answers to activity 1 and activity 2 are used to evaluate student´s capacity to describe function of heart using specific vocabulary and present simple and undertanding of the interrelationships of the structures of the heart. Conclusions of the final activity are used to evaluate student´s capacity to recognise the relationship betwen lifestyle and heart disease and to evaluate and recommend healthy habit.s
