The Roles of the President A. Chief of State: ceremonial head of government, symbol of USA B. Chief Executive: has executive power via the Constitution C. Chief Administrator: directs US government D. Chief Diplomat: directs foreign policy, global US “spokesperson”

The Roles of the President E. Commander in Chief: supreme head of armed forces (via the Constitution) F. Chief Legislator: sets public policy agenda G. Chief of Party: leads party that controls the executive branch H. Chief Citizen: expected to be “representative of all the people”

Qualifications Formal: 1. Be a natural born citizen 2. Lived in the United States for 14 years 3. Be at least 35 years old Informal: Character Intelligence Charisma – personality, leadership Military Service (to some)

Terms and Term Limits Term of Office: FOUR years Traditionally, only served two terms; until FDR won four (1932, 1936, 1940, 1944) Where is the tradition from? 22 nd Amendment: limits presidential terms; only two now If you take over mid-term, you can get re- elected twice, but can’t serve more than 10 years total.
