What is a 100% Tobacco-Free School (TFS) Policy? A 100% Tobacco-Free School policy prohibits tobacco use by staff, students and visitors twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, inside Board-owned buildings or vehicles, on school owned property, and during school-sponsored student trips and activities.

It is important to protect our youth. Research shows that: Community involvement and comprehensive tobacco-free policies are needed to model appropriate behavior for youth. We cannot send mixed messages in our learning environments. In order to be effective, there must be no exceptions.

Research shows that: More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, homicides, and suicides combined.

Research shows that: The Surgeon General has concluded that there is no risk-free level of second-hand smoke exposure. Second- hand smoke exposure causes respiratory symptoms and causes children who already have asthma to experience more frequent or severe attacks.

How do schools implement 100% Tobacco-Free Policies? A 100% TFS policy is adopted at the local district level. Broad-based community support is important in not only passing strong policies but implementing them as well.

Implementing a 100% TFS Policy Prohibit all students from possessing any tobacco products. Banning all tobacco promotion and advertising in all district facilities and events. Posting signs throughout the campus to make all visitors aware of the policy.

Implementing a 100% TFS Policy Sending home parent packets detailing the policy at the beginning of the school year. Educating staff and administrators regarding policy enforcement and compliance. Educating students and staff about the health risks of tobacco use. Helping tobacco users quit. The good news is there is plenty of support available for students and adults who want assistance.

Is it time for 100% Tobacco- Free Schools? In 2010, the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky sponsored the Kentucky Health Issues Poll and the results: 83% of the adults surveyed in our NKADD favored schools adopting tobacco-free campuses. This is similar to findings across the state: a large majority (86%) favored schools adopting TFS policies.
