1946  2016 Chester’s Challenge to Stamp Out Smoking Chester’s Journey Through Time

Chester decided to go on a trip through time from the 1940s to see how much we’ve learned about smoking!

Do you think more people smoked: In the 1940s? Now? Or do you think it’s the same?

Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here

The correct answer was... they smoked MORE in the 1940s!

Chester discovered that most adults would have smoked in the 1940s because they didn’t know how bad it is for them! He decided to go on a mission to help people realise how bad smoking is for them and stamp out smoking!

1940 1941 1942 1943 1944 1945 1946 1947 1948 1949 1940s Up until this time, only men smoked – it was very rare for a woman to smoke! Cigarette companies wanted to make more women smoke so that they could make more money!

The correct answer was TRUE ! They made special cigarettes especially for women, or did deals for discounted household items e.g. Cleaning items, pots & pans etc. But once again, they left out the bits about the horrible damage it would cause inside the body!

Now let’s look at the changes in smoking over the years...

1950s Chester wanted to help take action! He started to spread the word that smoking is bad for us! 1950 1951 1952 1953 1954 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959

Chester explained that smoking damages our lungs Some people began referring to their ongoing cough as “smokers’ cough” But most people put this down to rumours and continued to smoke! 1950s 1950 1951 1952 1953 1954 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959

Chester and his new science friends started to uncover more and more about the dangers of cigarettes! They discovered a lot about what smoking does to the body and none of it was good... 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 1960s

Chester began teaching people all about what they’ve discovered... The 3 main chemicals in cigarettes are: 1.NicotineNicotine 2.Carbon MonoxideCarbon Monoxide 3.TarTar Click on each of the chemicals above to find out what it does to the body. 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 NEXT SLIDE >>>

NICOTINE Nicotine is the part of a cigarette that causes people to become addicted. When you breathe it in, it hits the brain within 5-10 seconds & increases your heart rate (a.k.a pulse) The nicotine plays a trick on the brain, making people feel relaxed. This is why some people smoke to relieve stress. But actually, it’s making their heart beat faster – so their body is anything but relaxed! BACK TO LIST >>>>

The oxygen we breathe in has nowhere to go, so it gets trapped in our lungs This can lead to a lung disease called COPD, which makes it very hard to breathe CARBON MONOXIDE BACK TO LIST >>>> Carbon monoxide is stronger than oxygen so it replaces oxygen in our blood

Tar is the black sticky stuff that roads are made out of Tar dyes all of our organs black and stops our lungs from working as well TAR BACK TO LIST >>>>

Chester and friends also campaigned in Parliament He wanted to see laws in place to help prevent people smoking 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 1960s

So he campaigned to have cigarette adverts banned from TV and on racing cars And he won! 1960s 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969

They help people remember the damage smoking causes – good thinking Chester! 1970s 1970 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 197 1 Have you seen the written health warnings on cigarette packaging? So he kept campaigning! In 1971, the warning “smoking can damage your health” had to be shown on cigarette packets

In the 80s, Chester and friends had cigarette advertising banned from cinemas 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1987 1988 1989 198 6 1980s

In 2003, they finally got cigarette advertising completely banned! There also had to be more detailed health warnings on packets... 2000s 2000 2001 2002 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 200 3

Chester was very busy in 2007. He’d managed to get a lot more friends on his side since the 1940s! Together they banned smoking in public places for example, in restaurants or in shops 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2008 2009 200 7 2000s

Chester was also concerned about young people smoking Did you know that most people who smoke started before they were 18? That’s why it’s so important to prevent children under 18 from smoking 2000s 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2009 200 8

So Chester and friends campaigned to have the age to buy cigarettes raised from 16 to 18. In 2008, it was made law to also display pictures in combination with the written health messages 2000s 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2009 200 8

Chester isn’t stopping yet! Do you see the cabinet behind the till covering all the cigarettes? Just last year, it was made illegal for cigarettes to be on display in shops! 2010s 201 0 2011 201 2 201 3 201 4 2016 201 5

2016 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 Now we’re back to today...

2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 Chester is trying to get smoking banned in cars that have children in them!

Let’s recap on what has changed over the past 70 years... 1950s – First ‘rumours’ that smoking might be harmful – talk of “smokers’ cough” 1960s – First scientific evidence of what harmful effects smoking has on the body. Television adverts banned. 1970s – Written warning – “smoking can damage your health” on packets 1980s – Cigarette advertising in cinemas banned

2003 – Complete ban on all cigarette advertising. More detailed and written warnings enforced. 2007 – Ban on smoking in public places 2008 – Age able to buy cigarettes raised from 16 to 18. Picture warnings on cigarette packets introduced. 2015 – Illegal to display cigarettes at the till.

We now know that cigarettes are bad for our health, but some people still smoke. Let’s think about why this might be...

Why do some people start smoking? They think it will make them taller

Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here

The correct answer was FALSE – smoking does not make us taller !

Why do some people start smoking? Because they see their family do it

Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here

The correct answer was TRUE ! Sometimes people start smoking because someone in their family smokes & they think ‘how bad can it be?’ But maybe they didn’t know it was harmful when they started. Most smokers wish they had never started, so its much easier to never start smoking in the first place.

Why do some people start smoking? They think it will make them smarter

Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here

The correct answer was FALSE – smoking definitely doesn’t make us smarter !

Why do some people start smoking? Because their friends smoke

Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here

The correct answer was TRUE ! Have you ever heard of peer pressure? That’s when people try to force you into doing something you don’t want to do and make you feel like you won’t fit in otherwise! But remember, you always have the power to say no!

Why do some people start smoking? They think it will make them look older

Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here

The correct answer was TRUE ! Some people think smoking will make them look older or more mature. But smoking makes you look older in another way – it makes you get wrinkles much earlier than someone who doesn’t smoke!

16 years old64 years old This is how smoking makes you look when you get older...

Why do some people start smoking? It will give them blue eyes

Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here

The correct answer was FALSE – of course smoking doesn’t change your eye colour!

BUT... It can change the colour of your teeth and nails to yellow

Why do some people start smoking? Because cigarette companies make smoking seem cool

Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here

The correct answer was TRUE ! Just like they did with women in the 1940’s, cigarette companies are still trying to make smoking seem cool. But it’s much harder for them to do this now that we know more about smoking! They’re trying to be really creative to make people want to smoke! Let’s look at some of the ways they’re doing this...

Did You Know? Cigarette companies have created sweet-tasting, colourfully packaged cigarettes?

What’s your favourite flavour? Is it chocolate? Bubblegum? Fruity?

Would you still like it if it was covered in tarmac ? What’s your favourite flavour?

What about jet fuel ? What’s your favourite flavour?

And poison, insecticides and sewage gas? What’s your favourite flavour?

But remember, that’s what’s in cigarettes so don’t be fooled – the flavoured versions are no different! Who do you think they’re trying to target with these flavours? (Click on your answer)

They’re targeting CHILDREN Cigarette companies need to be extra smart, because children like you know more and more about how smoking is bad for us! So don’t be fooled!

In some countries like the Philippines or Brazil, cigarette companies are giving out free cigarettes to children under 7 Why do you think they’re doing this? (Click on your answer)

Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here

2. They want to get them addicted Once they get the child addicted to cigarettes, they are going to have to more and more cigarettes! Click here to see a 2-year-old boy who this happened to...here

Children in these countries aren’t taught about smoking like you.... TASK : Write a letter to a child who doesn’t know about the dangers of smoking. What would you tell them about smoking to stop them from taking the free cigarette?

Chester’s come a long way, but now he needs YOUR help to carry on stamping out smoking!
