Speed- The distance an object is moving over a certain period of time Speed tells you how fast or slow an object is moving Instantaneous speed: the speed an object is travelling at a specific time Average speed: the speed of an object is the relationship between total distance and total time travelled Constant speed: object’s speed does not change; it remains the same

3 How do you Calculate Speed? Average speed = total distance / total time Speed= Distance divided by time Speed = d/t

8 What is Velocity? Velocity- is the speed of an object in a certain DIRECTION Example of Speed- A truck is travelling at 35 km/hr Example of Velocity- A truck is travelling at 35 km/hr heading northwest

9 Calculate Velocity Same as calculating speed Velocity= Distance/ Time in a certain DIRECTION

10 Units for Velocity Could be –meter/second going __________(Direction) –kilometers/hour going _______ (Direction)

11 Resultant Velocity Resultant velocity = true velocity If you are walking forward on a moving object (a bus), then you add together both velocities to calculate resultant velocity. If you are walking backward on a bus, you subtract your velocity from the bus’s velocity to calculate resultant velocity.

12 Examples of Resultant Velocity 2. The current is flowing in the same direction as the boat at 5 km/h 1. The boat is sailing west at 10 km/hr 3.What is its resultant velocity? 4. 10 km/hr + 5 km/hr = 15 km/hr

13 Examples of Resultant Velocity 2. The current is flowing in the opposite direction as the boat at 5 km/h 1. The boat is sailing west at 10 km/hr 3.What is its resultant velocity? 4. 10 km/hr - 5 km/hr = 5 km/hr

14 What is Acceleration? Acceleration- the change in velocity over a certain period of time The “speeding up” of an object The “slowing down” of an object The “changing direction” of an object

15 How do you Calculate Acceleration? The formula for calculating acceleration is: Acceleration = Final Velocity - Initial Velocity Final Time - Initial time

16 Acceleration Example Ex: A train stopped has a velocity of 0 m/s. It took the train 60 seconds to leave the station and reach a velocity of 30 m/s. What is the trains acceleration?

17 Solve it! Acceleration formula Final velocity - initial velocity / time 30 m/s - 0 m/s / 60 sec = 30 m/s / 60 sec =.5m/s/s.5 m/s 2
