4. Economy Coffee was Costa Rica’s principal source of wealth. Bananas soon became a rival to coffee. Costa Rica's inflation rate was an estimated 9.3% in 2007 and increased to 13.9% in 2008. The central government offers tax exemptions for those who are willing to invest in the country.
