3 What is STAAR Alternate? Assessment designed for students receiving special education services who have the most significant cognitive disabilities and are unable to participate in the other state assessments even with substantial accommodations. Not a traditional paper or multiple-choice test. Instead, the assessment involves test administrators observing as students complete state-developed assessment tasks that link to the grade level or high school course Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum. Test administrators then answer a series of questions in the Texas Assessment Management System, delivered through PearsonAccess, to evaluate student performance. 7 7 Adding and Registering Students Adding new students and registering them for the 2014 STAAR Alternate administration can be accomplished using the new-student wizard or processing a student data file. With both of these methods, the student will be placed in a “Default” registration group automatically. This “Default” registration group does not need to be created by the district coordinator or linked to an Alternate Assessment Teacher. Additionally, students in grades 3-8 will have the subject assignments made automatically. The subjects will only have to be chosen for students in grades 9-12.

33 Transfer Students If a student designated to take STAAR Alternate transfers into a district after March 28, 2014, the receiving district is not required to assess the student. If the student is transferring in from another Texas district after March 28, 2014, and has assessments already started in the Assessment Management System, the receiving district will need to move the student data so that the student’s score report is sent to the new district. The assessment does not need to be completed or submitted by the receiving district. The Assessment Management System will automatically finalize the assessment as is at the close of the assessment window. Copyright © 2012 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. 41 The receiving district must now assign a teacher to the student to complete the assessments. This can be done in the STAAR Alternate tab under Manage Teacher Assignments. Please refer to slides 14-18. For students transferring in after March 28, 2014, the student data will need to be moved to the new district for reporting purposes but an Alternate Assessment Teacher assignment is not necessary.
