3 Sources of a Strategic Research Agenda for JPI Urban Europe  Analysis of Future Trends and Challenges  Analysis of Existing Research Agendas  Vision of JPI U RBAN E UROPE  Synthesis of SRA Workshop  Forum/Stakeholder discussions

4 Trends and Challenges Economic Leaders attract talents and innovative firms, room for creativity and ideas ICT Digital connectivity vs. face-to-face Demographic Change 2050 urban population 83%, aging Migration from in- and outside Europe, skilled, non-skilled Environment 40% of the global energy consumption comes from buildings, cities produce 80% of greenhouse gas intra-urban accessibility and inter-urban mobility is under permanent stress Cities and city networks compete and collaborate in ways differ from the past

10 Vision of JPI U RBAN E UROPE Vision of the proposed JPI U RBAN E UROPE is: “to fundamentally rethink and manage the dynamics of urban development in Europe to sustain and enhance urban areas as a place of vitality, livability and accessibility for future generations”.

11 Research Approach Addressing the four strategic pillars: Intellectual and Economic Capital: Cities and city networks as sources of economic vitality, resulting in successful competition in the international knowledge economy through the development of people, skills and capabilities. Mobility and Technology Capital: Cities as nodes for smart logistics and sustainable mobility, at both intra-city and inter-city levels, technological solutions support the changing needs of citizens Environmental Capital: Cities as centres for sustainable ecological development and for stainable energy production and use Social and Cultural Capital: Society as seedbeds for a broad socio- economic participation and cultural diversity in an ethnically segmented urban system.
