4 VISION  To improve the quality of life by reducing the avoidable blindness in the district of Dhenkanal, an initiative has been launched by the District Administration in mission mode named “Mission Netrotsav” under which comprehensive eye screening campaigns would be organized targeting various segments of population with the participation of the community, civil groups, NGOs, Corporates & nodal agencies of Government with the aim to make the target mass free of avoidable blindness & ensure the requisite eye care.

6 The target segments  School Children/ Pre-school children  Drivers & Cleaners  Villages of MADA & Cluster areas  Population of NAC/ Municipality areas  Handloom weavers  Artisians  Periphery villages of industries & mines  Employees & Labourers, including contractual labourers of industrial plants  Building construction workers  Beedi Shramiks As part of the Mission, a unique initiative has been launched for the capacity building of teachers & Anganwadi Workers to screen the children & identify eye problems. For the purpose a training kit is being provided through the funds of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan & National Rural Health Mission.

7 OBJECTIVE To reduce the avoidable blindness from the district of Dhenkanal by 2012.

8  An estimated 102,779 people in Odisha become blind every year, about 61,667 (60%) because of cataract alone.  Current performance of the cataract surgery in the state is around 106,386 eyes per year against the need for 343,602 eyes per year. 6/12/20168Mission Netrotsav Eye Care & Odisha

17 Training of School Teachers  A total of 1808 teachers were to be trained among which 1567 teachers have already been trained and the rest 241 teachers will be trained. The teachers were imparted 2 hours training by the Ophthalmic Assistants & were given the skill to examine the child for refractive error. They are also supplied with the examination kits at a cost of Rs.60/- which is supported by SSA. They have screened 1,68,743 students among which 3205 students are having eye problems.  It has also been decided to train one science teacher from every High school of 220 schools.

18 Screening of Drivers & Cleaners  All the drivers & cleaners of four-wheelers, buses, mini buses, trucks and tippers under Bus Association & Truck association will be screened at the Kalinga Eye Hospital and BKMM Rotary Eye Hospital.  An amount of Rs.50/- will be charged for the eye check up.  The investigation cards and banners will be printed by the Truck owners association.  The banners will be displayed at strategic points to generate awareness to the drivers & cleaners and encourage to have their eye screen within the time frame.

19 Screening of villages under MADA & Cluster Areas.  52 villages will be covered under MADA area.  20 villages will be covered under cluster area.  5 nos. of Ophthalmic Assistant working under H&FW Dept. and one each from Kalinga Eye Hospital & BKMM Rotary Eye Hospital will be deputed to hold the screening camps in the MADA & Cluster areas.

20 Screening at Municipality & NAC area.  8 nos. of screening camps had been conducted in Dhenkanal Municipality in the month of July 2010.  3 nos. of screening camps will be held in K.Nagar which will be carried out by Kalpana Club, K.Nagar.  3 nos. of screening camps will be held in Bhuban NAC which will be carried out by Chamber of Commerce, Bhuban.

21 Screening of Handloom weavers & Artisan  1328 Handloom weavers are to be screened at the Block headquarters.  4218 artisan will be screened at the Block head quarters.

22 Training of Anganwadi Workers  1654 Anganwadi workers are to be trained on how to screen the children (0-5 years) and identify the eye problems.  The Anganwadi workers will be provided with a kit of Rs.150/- which will be purchased by their concerned Goan Kalyan Samiti under NRHM.

23 Screening of periphery villages of industries & mines.  39 nos. of periphery villages of industry & mines will be covered under the mission by 20 industrial houses.  The industries and mines will organize the screening camps in their concerned periphery villages with the support of Kalinga Eye Hospital & BKMM Rotary Eye Hospital.  One screening camp of Narbheram employees has been conducted by DHH, Dhenkanal and Glass correction of 30 employees are made.

24 Screening of Employees/ Labourers including contractual labourers of the industrial plant  13277 labourers of the industrial plants will be screened under the mission with the support of Kalinga Eye Hospital & BKMM Rotary Eye Hospital & DHH, Dhenkanal.

25 Screening of Building Construction workers & Beedi Shramiks.  1500 nos. of building construction workers will be screened in this mission.

26 Screening at Community level.  ANM at 167 Sub Centre detects Cataract Cases during their routine visit to the villages and maintain a village wise blindness register for the Sub Centre. These cases are subsequently examined by the Ophthalmic Assistant at village level.  ASHAs are trained on the spot by the ANMs to detect Cataract Cases.  ANMs are to screen the old age pensioners at G.P. Level on 15 th of every month to detect Cataract Cases. So far 654 nos of cases have been detected at G.P. Level.
