1 Roman and Greek Art and Architecture Standard 7.1.1

2 The Romans The Romans admired Greek art. They decorated their homes with Greek art. The Greeks liked their statues to look perfect in form Romans liked their statues to look more realistic, with wrinkles and yes, even warts!!!

3 Roman statues looked more realistic

4 Greek statues showed people with idealized bodies. Romans liked to copy Greek statues and call them their own. (Cheaters)

7 Roman Architecture Ideas Romans also took ideas from the Greeks when creating and building. They used Greek porches and rows of columns called colonnades.

8 Roman Designs The Romans also designed some of their own features, such as arches and domes. Were the first to use an arch which help to support bridges, aqueducts,and buildings. Vaults were arches built together to form domes.

16 Roman Architecture The Romans were the first people to invent and use concrete. Concrete is a mixture of volcanic ash, lime, and water. Concrete made buildings stronger, which allowed them to be built taller. For example…………

21 Roman vs. Greek The Romans liked Greek art and architecture. They used many Greek ideas and designs in creating new pieces of art and buildings. With your “elbow” partner describe the following: 1 describes the influence of Greek art on Rome, and how Rome became different from the Greeks 2 describes the Greek influence on architecture and what new ideas the Romans created. Both of you take notes on the other’s description

22 The Work After learning about how much Greece influenced Rome, how much influence do you think an earlier culture has on a culture that follows it? Why do you think some cultures influence others? Can you think of a modern day example? A 2-paragraph minimum response required.
