1 Long Term Causes of the American Revolution 1- Mercantilism WHAT- THE ECONOMIC IDEA THAT A COUNTRY’S ULTIMATE GOAL WAS SELF-SUFFICIENCY & THAT ALL COUNTRIES WERE IN COMPETITION TO ACQUIRE THE MOST GOLD AND SILVER IMPACT- BRITAIN SAW THEIR COLONIES AS A WAY TO ACHIEVE THIS

2 2- The Navigation Acts - 1651 WHAT- A series of British laws restricting Colonial trade. IMPACT- Though some colonists benefited from these laws, many others resented the restrictions

3 3- Salutary Neglect WHAT- The English policy to not really enforce its regulations as long as the colonies made them money. IMPACT- Britain did not supervise the colonies closely, thus the colonies would develop the taste for self-government. Example: New England Town Hall meeting

4 4- The Enlightenment WHAT- It was an intellectual movement in Europe during the 1700s. Also called the Age of Reason. IMPACT- Enlightenment ideas would eventually lead many colonists to question the authority of the British government.

5 5- The Great Awakening WHAT- It was a religious movement in The colonies during the 1700s IMPACT- It led to an interest in higher education, And caused people to question traditional authority.
