5 Guided Practice with Context Clues Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow. The Cold War During the 20 th century, the Cold War involved two major powerhouses, the United States and the Soviet Union, both of whom strived to be the ultimate world power. The Cold War was not a physical battle between two countries. Rather, it was a battle for power in world politics and economics. Both the United States and the Soviet Union used the same strategy–spreading their ideology through propaganda. Many people in the United States, promoting their ideology of democracy and private ownership, spread propaganda as a way to instill a fear of communism as anti-American. For example, cartoons showing communists destroying democracy could be found in popular magazines and newspapers of the time. This propaganda was so effective that people began to fear that their neighbors and government officials were communist. However, few of those accused were convicted.
