4
4 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart Rittal means INNOVATION
5
5 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart Rittal for Grid Computing Target: To ensure HIGH AVAILABILITY RELIABILITY BUSINESS CONTINUITY SECURITY
6
6 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart Rittal for Grid Computing Facing the evolving needs and severity of modern technologies to favour the growing performance of equipments and allowing a proper protection to the strategic assets: the data The technology is fastly changing and thanks to the progress obtained on hardware and software basis in protecting from intrusion, virus, spam, the major minaces are now represented by physical threats: heating, sabotage, energy‘s disturbs, distructive events The major cause of service‘s interruption is due to inadequateness of the physical infrastructure, which subsequently loss of data and expensive hardware damage. Prevention through a safe Infrastructure is a must
7
7 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart Market and technology trends Energy costs are rising fastly, while quality is constantly decreasing Space costs are growing Heating is strongly increasing due to processors growing performances
8
8 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart Market and technology trends: focus on heating It was 24 kW per room … … it is 24 kW per rack … … will it be 24 kW per Server in the future? Heat loads are increasing… Source: Electronics Cooling
9
9 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart BladeCenter H Form factor Rack/9U, high-availability midplane Blade bays Up to 14 2-processor, and up to 7 4-processor Up to 2 x 2900 W Power active supply modules 2 * 2.900 W = 5.800 W / BladeCenter 5.800 W * 4 = 23 kW / Rack Imagine: Put these servers into one rack… … in a typical datacenter environment 23 kW Challenge: Limits of air cooling
10
10 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart Maximum heat load of a conventional raised floor cooling solution: ~ 1.100 – 1.500 W/m² (100 - 140 W/sqft) = 3 - 5 kW / rack* ASHRAE, American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers …it works regarding the space. But what about cooling? … typical cooling problems: *Assuming 3m² space per rack = 1 m² rack + 1m² escape route in front of + 1m² escape route in the rear of the rack) Challenge: Limits of air cooling
11
11 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart One solution could be to put only one server into each rack: 23 kW 5,8 kW 2000 x 600 x 1000 (HxWxD) But what about the wasted space? 5,8 kW 3,9 m² space required 3,9 m² space required 3,9 m² space required 3,9 m² space required Challenge: Limits of air cooling
12
12 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart The Solution: ACTIVE Cooling! 23 kW The solution
13
13 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart Active cooling in details High Availability due to real redundancy 1 2 HEX fan Rack LCP
14
14 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart The Solution: PROACTIVE Cooling! 40 kW The NEXT STEP
15
15 GRID INDUSTRY DAY – Catania – October 2006 Alessio Nava add to cart Rittal for Grid Computing A Grid Computing Infrastructures need physical performing capabilities for all the elements of the Infrastructure Rack: Modular platform Extended load capability Rigidity and stability Broad range of accessories Power: Modular UPS Redundancy HOTSWAP Scalable distribution system Flexibility Cooling: Active cooling Redundancy HOTSWAP Scalability Reliability Security: Auto estinguishing system Redundancy HOTSWAP Monitoring system User friendly Monitoring & Remote Management: Security Redundancy HOTSWAP User friendly
