2 “Bellringer” Answers 1. Tobacco and alcohol are injurious to health. (Two or more singular nouns connected by and usually take a plural verb.) 2. Age and experience brings wisdom. (Age alone doesn’t bring wisdom. Here the two nouns together express the same idea and hence we use a singular verb.) 3. My father and my guardian want me to study law. 4. Oil and water do not mix. 5. Each man and each woman has a vote. 6. Neither John nor Peter has any right to the property. 7. Either Jack or his brother is responsible for this. 8. A thousand dollars were distributed among the prize winners. 9. One of my friends works in Paris. 10. A committee was appointed to assess the gravity of the situation. (A collective noun takes a singular verb when the group is thought of as a single unit.)

4 Announcements Every student is REQUIRED to participate in the class wide spelling bee. Your participation will count as a test grade. The class wide spelling bee is November 17, 2015. We will have periodic quizzes over the spelling of these words in order to ensure that you are prepared for the class wide spelling bee. The top two students from each class will progress to the school wide spelling bee. There will be a quiz on Friday, Nov. 13, 2015!

5 Scholastic Book Fair! The Scholastic book fair will be here next week! We will go to the book fair during class on Tuesday (11/17/15) Family Book Fair night is also on Tuesday (11/17). –Students that bring a parent/guardian to parent night will receive a “No Homework” pass for ELA.

9 Conflict notes Conflict: The main problem in a story Internal Conflict – a struggle that takes place in a character’s mind (person vs. self). –Ex: You know there is a test tomorrow. Should you go to the movies with friends or take the time to study for your test?? External Conflict – a struggle between a character and an outside force (person vs. world, person vs. person, etc.). –Ex: Woody and Buzz Lightyear do not get along at the beginning of Toy Story and attempt to sabotage one another.

10 5 Types of conflict 1.Man vs. Self: (Internal conflict) This conflict occurs when a character has a tough decision to make or struggles with his/her thoughts and ideas. 2.Man vs. Man: (External conflict) This conflict occurs when a character has an argument, disagreement, or fight with another character. 3.Man vs. Nature (External conflict) This conflict occurs when a character battles a force of nature (earthquakes, hurricanes, animals, etc.) 4.Man vs. Society (External conflict) This conflict occurs when a character disagrees with the laws or beliefs of a society. 5.Man vs. Technology (External conflict) This conflict occurs between a character and technology such as machines, robots, etc.

11 5 types of conflict (examples) Example Type of Conflict A man must face a dangerous storm in order to make it back to his country. Man vs. Nature A police officer tries to stop a robber from robbing a bank. Man vs. Man A superhero must decide not to use super powers to cheat on a test. Man vs. Self An alien must prove to the people of the city that he is not dangerous. Man vs. Society A woman must battle a group of robots to save her city. Man vs. Technology

13 Turn to page 292 of your literature book. Purpose: To select textual evidence to support a conflict in the myth "Prometheus". “Prometheus” page 292

14 Using specific evidence from the text, provide an example of a conflict. What is the problem? Which of the 5 types of conflict is this an example of? Why would the author include this type of conflict? This should be answered in at least one complete paragraph (5-6 sentences), with correct punctuation and grammar. Afterwards, complete the “After You Read” section on page 297 in complete sentences. Independent practice
