2 The Infinitive: to + verb
Examples of infinitives: to talk to run to see to wash to walk to think to listen to to hug to watch to write to put to sing to tell to read to dance to whistle to worry to prepare to clean to love to study to cook to cry to shake

3 Like, Love, Hate + Infinitive
Like + infinitive Examples: I like to watch TV on Saturday mornings. My father likes to take photos with his new smart phone. Love + infinitive Mr. Smith loves to swim in salt water. We love to go to the movies on the weekend. Hate + infinitive Mark and his girlfriend hate to dance. They hate to stay home on the weekend.

4 The Gerund: A gerund is verb that acts like a noun.
Examples of gerunds: talking running seeing washing walking thinking listening to hugging watching writing putting singing tell ing reading dancing whistling worrying preparing cleaning loving studying cooking crying shaking

5 Like, Love, Hate + Gerund Like + gerund Love + gerund Hate + gerund
Examples: I like watching TV on Saturday mornings. My father likes taking photos with his new smart phone. Love + gerund Mr. Smith loves swimming in salt water. We love going to the movies on the weekend. Hate + gerund Mark and his girlfriend hate dancing. They hate staying home on the weekend.

6 Enjoy: We use enjoy only with the gerund.
Enjoy + gerund I enjoy watching soccer on TV. Tom and Abe enjoy swimming in cold water. Mary enjoys speaking French to her French teacher.

7 Incorrect Use (Wrong):
Examples: WRONG We like to going to the cinema. CORRECT We like to go to the cinema Or We like going to the cinema.

8 A gerund is a noun. Examples:
I like traveling around the world. (traveling: noun) I like ice cream. (ice cream: noun) Susie loves listening to music on her I-phone. (listening to: noun) Susie loves long dresses. (dresses: noun) We hate washing dishes. (washing: noun) We hate liver. (liver: noun) Sally and Tom enjoy walking for long hours. (walking: noun) Sally and Tom enjoy pizza with a lot of cheese. (pizza: noun)
