 Our topic in Seminar this week is to discuss Why we can’t live on Seawater!  Osmosis: movement of water from high to low concentration  Osmolarity is a measure of solute concentration  Human blood is 300 mosm/L and sea water is 1000 mosm/L  Think in terms of osmosis and concentration…

 Let’s go on a field trip and discuss the acid base balance the kidneys do…  Then we will come back and discuss the kidneys and fluid regulation…

 1. What are the limits of human kidneys to concentrate urine?  2.Why does that preclude us from drinking seawater?  3. How long do you think someone could live on seawater alone?  4. What are normal daily water requirements for an average adult?

 5. What are some of the symptoms of dehydration?  6. If you were working as a nurse for a patient that was not allowed to eat or drink, how much intravenous fluid per hour should they be given per hour to prevent dehydration. Assume you are using an isosmotic IV fluid.

1. Read Chapter 15 2. Post to the Discussion this week 3. Complete Unit 7 Lab: PHILS lab 31:screenshot pre lab completion and all post lab questions 4. Quiz on Chapter 15. 5. Have a Great Week!!!
