A celebration of e-learning excellence in the South East

Hi5 eLearning Awards Awards Ceremony & Dinner Vincent Rooms Westminster Kingsway College 3 rd March 2009 Welcome

Hi5 eLearning Awards Tonight we celebrate and recognise the innovation and efforts of practitioners and support staff in engaging students through the use of ILT. The first Post-16 e-learning awards scheme dedicated to the South East, launched in May 2008. To promote and embed e-learning in all the sectors that we support.

Innovation Award Runner Up (Beginner Level) Sarah Bignell, Chrissy Sutton, Sally Trott Hadlow College, Kent Motion Analysis Videoing Judges Verdict: “I was particularly impressed how students are able to assess and dissect their own performance. This is an ideal tool for student self-improvement and increased autonomy in a learning environment. The College also demonstrated good use of Moodle to make this resource widely accessible at all times.”

Innovation Award Winner (Beginner Level) David Nott Chichester College, West Sussex Inspired Learning Using Mobile Devices Judges Verdict: “This entry demonstrates a high level of innovation and also practical benefit to learners by employing various techniques! It motivates motor vehicle learners – who are traditionally hard to motivate.”

Innovation Award Runner Up (Advanced Level) Robert Walker, Emma Dollery Eastleigh College, Hampshire E-Skills Passports at Eastleigh College Judges Verdict: “Excellent use of an opportunity with lots of good practice - engaging middle managers and giving time for staff development. I particularly like the way that providing management information has been built into the set-up. Worthy of reward.”

Innovation Award Winner (Advanced Level) Carol Wrycraft, Karen Scott MidKent College, Kent Moodle and New Technologies Judges Verdict: “I really like the way this project is using a whole range of technologies to deliver learning, especially Web 2.0 social networking. The combination of wikis, Moodle quizzes, podcasting and sound files is particularly effective.”

Assessment Award Runner Up (Beginner Level) Alistair Reid-Thom, Dennis Dowsett, Geoff Whitefield, Tony Teague Fareham College, Hampshire External Assessment and Moderation of BTEC HNC Engineering Courses via Moodle Judges Verdict: “This is a well-organised use of Moodle to facilitate and collate external assessment that demonstrates thoughtful development over time. This sophisticated approach to moderation and relationships with examiners is a real contribution to the growing e-maturity of the organisation. A worthy prizewinner.”

Assessment Award Winner (Beginner Level) Sarah Snowdon, Ray Middleton, Annie Russell-Browne The Isle of Wight College, Isle of Wight Establishing IT-Based Initial Assessment In The Prison Environment Judges Verdict: “This submission offers a significant step-up in the progression and development of e-learning and assessment with offenders. The comprehensive, well organised and progressive approach to initial assessment is very encouraging in a sector fraught with difficulties for learners and educators. The College is to be congratulated on a solid professional approach to innovation and good practice which has earned its place on the list of winners.”

Assessment Award Runner Up (Advanced Level) Tony Edge, Kevin Goble Southampton City College, Hampshire Moodle Assessment for Engineers Judges Verdict: “This submission constitutes a significant step forward in the development and deployment of e-learning and e-assessment within the department concerned. This is a robust and effective use of Moodle for assessment which, in building sound practice rather than seeking innovation for its own sake, is beneficial both to staff and learners.”

Assessment Award Winner (Advanced Level) Simon Gracethorne Varndean College, East Sussex Using a Learning Platform to Support Mathematics Judges Verdict: “This submission offers an organised and well resourced platform which has become a comprehensive resource to the staff and students of the College and in particular the Mathematics department. It represents a proficient and whole-hearted team attempt to make effective use of the VLE and the outcomes of a sensible, grounded and well planned move through technologies from web to intranet to learning platform.”

Technical Infrastructure Award Runner Up (Beginner Level) Terry Bensted Dorton College, Kent Implementation of Moodle at Dorton College Judges Verdict: “Dorton College is for visually impaired students. As this college is not mainstream, I think this entry is commendable as an ‘oasis in the desert’ of ILT development.”

Technical Infrastructure Award Winner (Beginner Level) The Training Team West Berkshire Training Consortium, Berkshire The Long Journey to e-Maturity Judges Verdict: “Some excellent materials and techniques which have engaged learners throughout. It’s heartening to see that senior managers have attended e-learning courses and are fully ‘on board’. This entry demonstrates a significant journey in the progression of a private provider.”

This entry came very close to winning this category as it was so user focused.”

Technical Infrastructure Award Winner (Advanced Level) Charles Whinney Itchen College, Hampshire Choices Enrolment System Judges Verdict: “This entry demonstrates a highly professional approach with real benefits for staff and students. The improvements in time saved and efficiency must be significant. The submission is well based and indicates significant background activity in the planning and execution of the Choices system of organisation and management which enriches the e-maturity of the College.”

Learning Support Award Winner (Beginner Level) Christine Allen, Katie Butler South Kent College, Kent Using Webquests in Moodle to Enhance Information Literacy Judges Verdict: “I like it. It involved everyone and everyone remained engaged. It is an innovative way of using Moodle. 20 Widening Participation Award Runner Up (Beginner Level) Maurice Keeley, Neil Wilson, David Hillery ATG Training, Buckinghamshire The Future Zone VLE Using Moodle Judges Verdict: “This submission outlines a strategic development into the world of VLEs and e-learning that represents a far-sighted and imaginative approach to innovation. The work done has been clearly thought through and applied with vigour and progressive quality. This is a successful foundation stone for the growing use of technology-based learning in this organisation and potentially an exemplar for the sector if future development continues in this vein.”

Widening Participation Award Winner (Beginner Level) Jane Popov Isle of Wight Council, Isle of Wight Tell Me a Story Judges Verdict: “The simple but highly imaginative and pedagogically creative use and deployment of laptops, digital cameras and MP3 players/recorders allowed offender learners in custody to read stories for their children. The resulting multimedia CDs have provided significant support and comfort to these offender learners and their families, helping to engender and embed productive working relationships between learners, tutors and the Prison’s staff. This is an excellent entry which fully justifies it place as a winner.”

Widening Participation Award Runner Up (Advanced Level) Stephen Catton Sparsholt College, Hampshire Increased Staff/Student Awareness of and Engagement with Moodle Judges Verdict: “This submission offers a robust demonstration of the use of Moodle. The project mixes imagination and enthusiasm in getting the College involved with its VLE and has proved highly effective in increasing engagement plus raising the awareness and e-maturity of the organisation.”

This ESOL project delivers a number of advantages in the method and approach taken to multi-national students in the same class. It allows the staff and students to work at their own pace and alter the support required as appropriate to the student. This is having a big impact on the College in its work in ESOL.”
