BV Nurses Guidelines Students K-12 are Treated for any Potential Head “Bump” ●Any student with injury to the head area are to be seen by the school nurse ●School nurses do not diagnose, they -assess the student for signs and symptoms -determine if the injury needs emergency treatment or observation ●All head injuries - a call to parents/guardian and a BVSD Head Injury Note is sent on the student via email or backpack

4. Head Injury Guidelines Both are Addressed: During School Hours & After School Hours (See Handout)

Head Injury Notification Sent Home with Student The Head Injury Notification that is sent home with each and every head “bump” is for parents to be aware of the signs and symptoms to watch for in their child. A head injury may present over time and this information is helpful for parents to assess their child at home when a known head injury has occurred. (See Handout)

The following language appears in all National Federation Sports Rule Books: “Any athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion (such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion, or balance problems) shall be immediately removed from the contest and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health care professional.” National Federation of High Schools STATE AND NATIONAL GUIDELINES

10. SPORTS CONCUSSION STATISTICS Concussion Rates Per Sport The numbers below indicate the amount of sports concussions taking place per 100,000 athletic exposures. An athletic exposure is defined as one athlete participating in one organized high school athletic practice or competition, regardless of the amount of time played.
