CEE 492 RS Means –Introduction –Exercise ICE MC2 –Installation –Introduction and Overview Outline

Introduction to RS Means http://www.rsmeans.com/index.asp http://www.rsmeans.com/index.asp RS Means is a division of Reed Business Information. It provides cost information to the construction industry so contractors in the industry can provide accurate estimates and projections for their project costs. It has become a data standard for government work in terms of pricing, and is widely used by the industry as a whole. RS Means is accessible online, via CD-Rom, or in book form, and it also integrated in a variety of cost estimating software packages to allow for fast and reliable estimating. Cost information is updated annually These national-average costs can be adjusted to over 900 locations in the United States and Canada using the Location Factors provided.

RS Means Contains S.F. and per unit cost data

Definitions: –Daily Output: typical number of units a crew will install in a 8-hour day –Labor-hours: total number of labor-hours required to install one unit of work Crew = 1 person Daily output = 8 units Crew = 3 people Daily output= 8 units RS Means

Attached is a figure from R.S. Means estimating manual. This figure shows line item for a typical page from the unit price cost data book. The next slide shows the crew and equipment used to perform the work. Ⓒ

Crews are referenced later in R.S. Means RS Means

RS Means Exercise Have to excavate 31,200 C.Y. (Bank Measure) in three working weeks using a crawler mounted hydraulic excavator and load it onto trucks –How much would this cost?

Answer 31,200 C.Y. / 15 days = 2,080 C.Y. per day For this daily output we use a 3 C.Y. capacity excavator 31,200 C.Y. x 1.33 (total cost per unit) = $41,496 Since were loading onto trucks add 15%: $41,496 * 1.15 = $47,720

RS Means Exercise If the daily production for line 300 is lowered to 925 C.Y., find the man- hours per unit and bare costs for labor and equipment Ⓒ

© 11 Workshop 1 Solution Ⓒ Step 1: Calculate new crew productivity  Crew is B-12D  From Crew Table, existing crew productivity = 16 MH/day  Existing productivity is 16MH/day x 1 day/1620 CY = 0.0098 = 0.010 MH/CY  Therefore, new crew productivity is:  16 MH/day x 1 day/925 CY = 0.017 MH/CY Answer

© 12 Workshop 1 Solution Step 2: Calculate bare labor costs  Labor costs (from Crew Table):  $186.4 + $153.6 = $340/day  Existing labor costs per unit:  $340/day x 1 day/1620 CY = $0.21/CY  Therefore, new labor costs per unit:  $340/day x 1 day/925 CY = $0.37/CY Ⓒ Answer

© 13 Step 3: Calculate bare equipment costs  Equipment costs (from Crew Table):  $2017/day  Existing equipment costs per unit:  $2017/day x 1 day/1620 CY = $1.25/CY  Therefore, new equipment costs per unit:  $2017/day x 1 day/925 CY = $2.18/CY Ⓒ Answer
