3 Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Officially established in 1996 at the first summit in Bangkok 45 members: 27+1 EU, 13+1 ASEAN+3, India, Pakistan, Mongolia in 2008; Russia, Australia in 2010? Three pillars: -political dialogue -security and the economy -education and culture

4 The Story of the ASEM Education Secretariat (1) ASEM6: Helsinki, 10-11 September 2006 Chancellor Merkel offered to host the first ASEM Ministerial Meeting on Education (ASEM EMM) in 2008 First ASEM Ministerial Meeting on Education: Berlin, 5-6 May 2008 Second ASEM Ministerial Meeting on Education: Hanoi, 15-16 May 2009 „The Meeting agreed: (C1) To establish a rotating ASEM Education Secretariat (…). The Meeting welcomed Germany‘s offer to host the ASEM Education Secretariat for the first four-year cycle and invited ASEM member countries to join and send in staff.“ (Chair‘s conclusions Hanoi 2009)

5 The Story of the ASEM Education Secretariat (2) The Federal Ministry of Education and Research decided to host the AES at the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Bonn (Germany) until 2013 Start of work: 1st of September 2009 Staff: DAAD (2), Benelux (1), China (1), Indonesia (1) and Vietnam (1)

6 Tasks of the ASEM Education Secretariat „The AES will coordinate ASEM educational activities help with preparations for ASEM ministerial meetings facilitate the implementation of output-oriented initiatives that contribute to educational policy development and practices.“ (Chair‘s conclusions Hanoi 2009)
