Research Methodology?

Methodology: The FRAMEWORK associated with a particular set of paradigmatic assumptions that you will use to conduct your research, ie scientific method, ethnography, action research, grounded theory, case study research.

Methodology Framework

Methods The TECHNIQUES you will use to conduct data ie interviewing, surveying, observation.

Research Methods

Research Tools The DEVICES you will use to collect your data ie questionnaires, observation checklists, interview schedules.

Research Tools

Methodological Design The plan for conducting your study that includes all of these ie: Research Methodology Research Methods Research Tools

Doing Research ?

Case Study Research What is case study research? A method of studying elements of the social through comprehensive description and analysis of a single situation or case.

Case Study Research For example a detailed study of an individual, group, episode, event or any other unit of social life organization. Emphasis is often placed on understanding the unity and wholeness of the particular case. O’Leary, Z (2004) The Essential Guide to Doing Research.

Case Study Research Case studies allow for : Indepth exploration Are an examination of subtleties and intricacies They attempt to be holistic.

Case Study Research They explore processes as well as outcomes. They investigate the context and setting of a situation. The case study approach is eclectic and broad.

Phineas Gage as a Case Study

Case Study Research Much of what psychologists know about the human brain has come from case studies of individuals who had brain surgery or brain damage in accidents. Phineas Gage (1823-1860) is one such case study..

Case Study Research Phineas Gage’s injury served as a case study for the effects of frontal lobe damage. He did not lose a specific mental ability, such as the ability to speak or follow directions. However, his personality and moral sense were altered. Psychologists now know that parts of the cortex (called the association areas) are involved in general mental processes, and damage to those areas can greatly change a person.
