1 The Poultry Industry

2 Broiler Industry Production of Quality Chicken Meat
Tasty, Healthy & Safe Welfare Friendly Environmentally Aware Affordable Role of the Breeder Improve the efficiency of this process

3 Role of Breeding Companies
Global business Develop high quality breeding stock to suit market requirements Diverse gene pool ensure flexibility to meet range of different requirements. Examples: US market demands a high proportion of breast meat while Asian markets prefer dark leg meat Birds that can thrive in high temperatures versus more temperate climates Birds that thrive on wheat versus maize based diets Ongoing selection process to ensure that pure lines continue to develop desired traits

4 Role of Breeding Companies
Using Natural Selection within Pure or Pedigree lines, breeding companies improve appropriate performance traits The Pure lines are then multiplied by breeding to produce Great Grandparents, which in turn produce Grandparents, which themselves produce Parent Stock (PS) – which are sold to customers who will breed the Broilers to be sold for your table

15 Genetic Selection Criteria
Today: Live Performance Growth FCR Yield Welfare Liveability Leg strength Cardiac fitness Uniformity Footpads 1960: Liveweight Reproductive Fitness Eggs Fertility Hatchability Persistency 3 broad areas, each roughly 33% of whole

16 R&D Facts Partnerships with leading research centres
Fund University research Use of innovative & state-of-the-art technologies to support improved selection of high quality birds Diverse gene pool

17 Technological Innovation
Genomics Lifetime FCR Lixiscope Oximeter Ultrasound

18 R&D technologies Lifetime FCR – feed conversion ratio. Enables monitoring of consumption of feed for conversion into poultry meat Lixiscope – method for measuring skeletal strength Oximeter – measures oxygenation of the blood, indicator of health Ultrasound – measures muscle development

19 Carbon footprints of food
Improvements in feed conversion ratio will improve carbon footprint

20 Genomics Exciting and still developing technology
Chicken genome sequence available – 2.8 million genetic markers (SNPs) identified Enables identification of associations between DNA markers and important traits – supports more accurate selection NOT about genetic modification

21 Health and Bio-security
21

22 Health and Bio-security Practices
Aim is to minimise risk of disease Farms isolated from one another Continuous monitoring and testing Regular audits from authorities Restricted entry to non-essential personnel Shower in/out all production facilities Restriction on employees’ ownership of ‘pet’ birds Comprehensive staff training Minimise disease risk to, from and between birds

23 Health and Bio-security Practices

24 Welfare 24

25 Welfare Practices Key priority to ensure optimum welfare for our birds
Through R&D steadily improved liveability and reduced stress Increasing number of selection criteria Environmentally controlled transport Every production employee trained in bird handling adheres to humane treatment of birds

26 Product Performance Genetics Nutrition Health Management Optimise

27 Continuing Progress in Bird Performance
Balanced Selection Continuing Progress in Bird Performance No Compromise in Welfare Health focused R&D Environmentally Sound
