1 Physics Section 18.1 Draw schematic diagrams of electrical circuits A schematic diagram is a representation of a circuit that uses lines to represent wires and different symbols to represent components.

2 An electric circuit is a closed conducting loop which contains a source of potential difference and a load. A short circuit does not contain a load, resulting in an unsafe increase in current. A load is any component that dissipates energy, such as a light bulb, an electric motor, or resistor.

3 Wire the circuit shown in the schematic diagram.

4 The source of potential difference is called the EMF source. EMF is the electromotive force. It is the maximum potential difference in an open circuit. Assignment Page 645 Problems 1 - 5
