GP Wards/specialties (‘Buddy ward’ system?)

B EGINNING OF THE S HIFT Adequate, concise handover Sick patients Senior reviews (F1/PA clerkings) Those waiting to be seen…Can be a disaster! Prioritise tasks and allocate Don’t be tempted to take on too much! Introduce yourself to the hospital at night team

D URING THE S HIFT Keep yourself free to review/advise Don’t panic You WILL feel overwhelmed at times Monitor juniors – delegate patients if busy “See Mrs X, discuss with me and we will see together” Don’t worry about asking for help/advice Consultants are on call They WILL want to know

F INISHING Y OUR S HIFT Handover once again imperative Ensure your team (& you!) get off on time Especially post nights/weekends You will (usually) NEVER get through everything Patients handed over does NOT count as a failure!

S UMMARY Remember you are now the registrar Do not clerk everyone! DELEGATE Familiarise yourself with systems and the team Don’t be afraid to ask for advice Have FUN
