Literary Analysis Writing Prompt Write a literary analysis paragraph about a choice that a character made. Must include: Topic sentence Textual evidence (choice) Commentary (connect choice to consequence) Textual evidence (consequence) Commentary (Explain consequence)

Topic Sentence A topic sentence introduces the main idea Ex: In the novel Tangerine, Mrs. Fisher plans the road trip that she and Paul will be making to Tangerine Florida.

Textual Evidence (choice) “Mom had calculated that we could leave at 6:00 a.m. central daylight time, stop three times at twenty minutes per stop, and still arrive at our destination at 9:00 p.m. eastern daylight time” (1).

Commentary (Sum up choice and introduce consequence) Mrs. Fisher experienced many moves as a child and as an adult she had become as expert at it. By having the trip planned out, Paul and Mrs. Fisher arrived to their destination on time.

Textual Evidence (consequence) “Dad was standing in there with his arms open. He called out, ‘Perfect timing, you two. The pizzas got here five minutes ago’” (10).

Commentary (explaining consequence) As a consequence of having a well-planned road trip, Mrs. Fisher and Paul arrived at their new home safely and just in time for pizza!

Flashback vs Foreshadowing Flashback is the interruption of a story to show or tell about an incident or scene from the past. 1. Why do you think authors or movie screenwriters might use flashback? 2. Find at least two examples of flashback in Tangerine thus far.

Foreshadowing Foreshadowing is when clues are planted about what will happen later in the story. Foreshadowing creates an atmosphere of suspense and keeps the audience wondering what will happen.
