Steel Fabrication & Erection of Belle Chase Primary School Proposal – Fall 2015 ET 494 – Senior Design II Derek Duhon Instructor: Dr. Koutsougeras Advisor: Mr. Rode 9-11-15

Abstract In the Fall of 2015 I will be covering the construction phase: – Construction Drawings – Building Schedule – Cost Estimate

Purpose The purpose of this project is to demonstrate a complete construction process using all aspects of construction. This project will show the skills and abilities learned from the Construction Engineering Program.

Highlighted Deliverables covered in Spring 2015

WHY USE STEEL? Does not substantially expand and contract with the weather - unlike wood. Does not need time to cure and is immediately at full strength – unlike concrete. Steel is versatile, having more strength with less weight. Steel is of uniform quality with proven durability.

Site Location The site is located in between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Mississippi River in Belle Chase, LA. F. Edward Hebert Boulevard, Belle Chasse, LA – which is directly behind the Plaquemines Parish School Board building.

Code Regulations Analysis Building Code: NFPA Life Safety Code, local & state building codes. As per – A.I.S.C. Specifications; Steel Construction Manual 13 th edition. – All Wide Flange Shapes ASTM A992 Grade 50. – All Miscellaneous Shapes ASTM A36. – HSS Shapes ASTM A500 grade B Fy=46 ksi. – High Strength Bolts A325, ¾” diameter minimum. – Anchor Rods and Bolts ASTM F1554 Grade 36.

Design Loads Using – Building Code: International Building Code 2009/ASCE 7-05 Floor Live Load – Class Rooms: 40 PSF – Mechanical Rooms: 125 PSF – Corridor/Assembly: 100 PSF – Office: 50 PSF Roof Live Load - 20 PSF Wind Load - Basic Wind Speed: 140 MPH

Deliverables to be covered in Fall 2015

Construction Drawings An erection plan of detailed drawings of this building will be implemented for the steel fabricators and steel erectors. Shop drawings will be used by the fabricators. These drawings will specify the type and location of the columns and beams used in the construction of the steel members for the Belle Chase Primary Pre-K building. The drawings will consist of line diagram representing framing in plans, elevations and sections to which principal dimensions, erection marks, notes, and when required; enlarged details, bolts installation requirements and also field welding requirements are added.

Scheduling The construction schedule is designed to assist the Project Managers and Superintendents in keeping the progress of the job on the timeline needed to meet the completion date. A detailed schedule of the following will be implemented:  Project Description – briefly and concisely provide a description of the project.  Scope of Work – what the project includes and excludes.  Execution Strategy – include execution strategy of a standard workweek as well as overtime.  Key Project Dates – project start and completion dates.  Path of Construction – describe the construction accessibility of the site for staging of materials.  Scheduling Threats – any sources of impending threats that may restrain the project from moving forward.  Exclusions – items that have not been included and therefore not supported during the development of the schedule.

Scheduling The construction schedule is not limited to these items and should be updated as the project is ongoing to further the production of the project. A checklist should be designed by the Project Manager for the Superintendent of the site to use on a daily basis to ensure the crews stay on task. The main objectives of the scheduling process is to do the following:  Improve the pre-planning efforts.  Improve the understanding of the project scope, deliverables & responsibilities.  Increase confidence in the project execution.  Increase profitability and return on investment (ROI).

Scheduling Organization will improve the effectiveness and efficiency in the ability to produce plans and schedules that are usable, reliable, and most importantly, provide productivity. The construction schedule for the Belle Chase Primary School will be made using Microsoft Excel 2010.

Cost Estimate The Cost Estimate will include an approximation of a contract-price, developed by the pricing of the engineering, procurement, and other costing staff. These projections are used to establish how project success will be measured, and to communicate work progress to the stakeholders at any given point in time.

Cost Estimate  Variable and Fixed – Fixed Cost refers to a cost which is not to be changed throughout the project lifecycle. It doesn’t change an increase or reduction of the work amount. Examples are setup cost, rental cost, cost for hiring of equipment, etc. – Variable Cost refers to any chargeable amount that can be changed with the amount of project work. An increase or reduction of project scope causes the respective change in variable cost. Examples are production materials expenses, money paid out to project team, cost of power and water.  Direct and Indirect – Direct Cost is directly associated with particular tasks or/and activities. Examples are team wages and expense on materials used. – Indirect Cost is expenses on overhead items. It doesn’t refer to as the project value. Examples are corporate tax, fringe benefit tax.

Cost Estimate The major tool of the cost estimation process is organized in a spreadsheet format. A cost estimate of all the time, labor, and resources necessary to perform and deliver this project will be implemented using Excel to calculate and compare resources.
